Cannon on Mo/Dustin Starr and Wrestling In General

----Something before I get into this letter from Cannon that I want to point out that I think has been lost in all these letters. Jeff McDonald contacted Dustin Starr FIRST. They talked about an amount. McDonald was happy with giving Starr that amount. Then, Mo decided that he did not think Starr was worth that amount and wanted Starr to prove he was worth that. That is the main point I made when all this discussion started and it still remains. And, some comments make it out as Starr is the bad guy for asking for a certain amount, but it was more like McDonald felt he should add someone to his roster and he was going to pay that amount.

----Loose Cannon sent in his two cents worth and it is a good read. Cannon is a guy that works almost every weekend. Whether you like his work or not, he does have the experience of POs and such.

Ok there been a lot take bout guarantees for coming in on a show. I've even went as far as posting a story on my website under my Cannon's Final Word Uncensored recently. Now as far guarantees there’s none in the wrestling business. If you think there is then you are certainly dumb as a box full of rocks.

This thing with Dustin Starr is he worth paying?? Well maybe so, but I tend to agree with others. First I wanna see if he can draw 1st then pay him what he wanted. Now I am not the owner or booker in which I have respect for both of them. But that’s their call it’s their show not mine. I wanna point something out like my colleague Tank did - the NBW show drew around 100 fans a week without no names just your bread and butter workers who's been with the company since day one that to me shows a lot.

If your own workers can't toat a show then why bring in a outsider. A new worker and pay him more that’s the main point. I am making the have the longest drive. I live in NE Arkansas and I told the owner I wasn't going to take advantage of him. I would come in off the door plain and simple why should I demand something more when its not there.

But if I am coming the longest, then I should at least get gas, but if its not there I am not going to bitch about it. Plus I did a lot of things the other night. I did 2 run ins plus I got my ass blistered by a bunch of swing belts from the fans. I did a match and I still got the same p/o and that’s the only way I want it because I will not take advantage of the promotion period. Why should I? It makes no sense what so ever.

Not saying Dustin Starr doesn't deserve the money but why should others suffer or get heat over it. The owner, he has the final call - it’s his money. I like Tank have been on TV off and on for years. I worked some WWE house shows [mostly with developmental guys] so I been there done that too. Like Tank they will say “Cannon you are fat ass you well never go no-where.” Well I know that before you even opened your damn mouths its better than being that than a never was.

My point is the guys are who make the company. There is not an outside faction that is going to make a difference. They prove that a week or so ago and plus NBW has been drawing a steady of a crowd long before me. There are a wrestling company that has a chance to make something outta themselves regardless of names regardless if you been on TV.

In closing I love this sport. It’s not a way to make a living it is passion. It is living a dream for me. Whether you getting into it to get in the big leagues or just a small group it makes me happy to entertain the crowd. I may suck to a lot of the workers out there but the fans judge me not the wrestlers until they tell me Cannon hang them boots up. I will go as long as I can even for off the door that’s who pays me the fans and they give me a bonus ever time I hear a boo that to me is priceless not money in a envelope.

RassleBits: TLCW tonight, Tomorrow Night, DVD inside, Wrestling on Saturday morning and More

----TONIGHT!!!!…and this might be too late unless you live in the Dyersburg area, but TLCW is in Bogota, TN tonight. I do know that “Picture Perfect” [Christian Jacobs/Jon Michael], Derrick King and four NBW guys will also be on the show - Jerry Weezy, Gryffon X, Phoenix X and the Kid. That’s all I know about the show.

----TOMORROW NIGHT!!! – I am in the process of arranging an internet connection for tomorrow night at the show. I will not know until I get there whether it will work or not. But, I will try to post something around 7:30 PM if I got it up and running. I will do up to the minute coverage with results of the matches in Ripley if the connection works.

----Take a look at this link to see the inside of the Seth Knight DVD. I want everyone to see the quality of the DVDs – it is not a DVD with crappy printing done from a printer you buy at Walmart – these are professionally done DVDs. They come in cellophane wrapping and are ready to sell in stores, gimmick tables or web sites. If you are an indy guy in this area or anywhere, just drop me a line and I will send you the DVD plan.

----Wrestling is back on Saturday mornings in Memphis. Total Chaos Wrestling attempted to do this just a few weeks back, but I think have since folded. They changed the venue of their last event three times before having it. Well, I think they had it. LOL I got this Press Release: TAJJ Championship Wrestling© has announced that it is launching an all new program on Comcast Channel 17 in Memphis, Tn. The program, “TAJJ Rewind” will feature hosts Adam Dunn and Randy Cresswell [one of our columnists] as they look back at the history of TAJJ and how it has affected the Mid-South in wrestling. Also, the program will feature matches from the past and matches involving former TAJJ talent from around the area. The program will air this Saturday at 11:30AM and while this is a clip program, TAJJ is once again bringing wrestling back to Saturday Mornings.

----I have an interview and story that I will be posting in the next few weeks. I got the prelims of them done. One is an interview with Mark Bravura on his interview with WWE as a script writer. This is very interesting stuff. The other piece is a feature article called “Wrestling with The Stars: Austin Lane”, which I think I have been promising since the first day of this site. I finally did interview him and he had some interesting things to say. Look for these things in the next few weeks.

----I also have been tons busy and have the show tomorrow, but I do plan on doing a Point-Counterpoint type piece on stuff said by Dustin Starr, Tank, Mo and Leonard Noan. A lot of good things are said in the letters, but not all that I agree upon.

Tank Talks

----Tim Robertson, better known as Tank in this area, has his own views on the Mo letters, Dustin Starr and indy wrestling in general. Tank recently was NBW champion and has worked for 9 years in this business. He actually worked many shows for me in Malden, MO and was an all around good person. Even though I was not one to pay lots of money [we were not drawing big crowds], Tank was always there to wrestle. He has improved to being an asset to any of the promotions in this area and I do feel he has “untapped” abilities. He is believable as a monster and actually knows psychology, which I hope I can claim was part of my teaching. Here is what he had to say.

First off let me say that these are my own comments. They are not endorsed by NBW regardless of how they may or may not feel on this situation.

I think that this whole matter is a bunch of bullshit! It is not ones own judgment that wills against them. It is the judgment of their peers. Who is to say that a person is worth a certain x amount of dollars? The booker? The promoter? The worker requesting the money? What about the other workers in a locker room that feel they deserve more than they are getting, but never complain? It goes back to the whole situation of "whose friend or boy you are". Friends get treated a lot better than acquaintances in the wrestling business. That’s for damn sure. Your friends look out for you and tell you when they think you are getting screwed. Don’t they? Well in the past 9 years in this business I can attest to one thing. There is no such thing as a "friend" in a wrestling locker room. Some may disagree. That’s your opinion just like this is mine. Outside of the ring you may be best friends with someone but when it comes down to you or them to get a so called push what do you think they are going to do? They are going to backstab you right out of it as soon as they get the chance. That’s just business right?

Who is to say that a person deserves to be in the wrestling business? Certainly not anyone from this area, with the exception of just a handful. Dustin Starr, you made the statement about how you feel a certain individual should do everyone a favor and just quit wrestling. Who in the hell are you to be passing judgment? In my eyes and a lot of other people I have spoken with - you are nothing more than everyone else in every little promotion in this area at best. So you have been on Memphis Television. Big fuckin deal. So have I. So you went to do a couple of spots with WWE. Ok, let’s break that up shall we. The ones that come to mind are, your very quick J.O.B.on Smackdown and lets not forget the whole security guard angle where you couldn't even take a superkick right. But its not the way you looked when you were doing it, it’s just the fact that you did it, right? You haven’t done a damn thing special that sets you apart from anyone else so where do you get off telling someone that they need to give up their dream? I know that I sure as hell wouldn't give up my dream just because somebody who thinks their hot shit told me so.

I know what everyone else is thinking right now. Tank is fat, he can't work, and he has no room to talk about anybody. That may be true, but I'm living my dream regardless of what anyone thinks about me. I've been in the ring with Lawler, Dundee, Bundy, Brickhouse, Valiant, Bass, R-n-R, Eaton. Regardless of the money that was paid to me for those matches, the workers with the established Names drew all those shows not me. I understand that, but at least I was fortunate enough to be a part of it. I was called for those shows by word of mouth not because I'm arrogant and cocky and think I'm the best. I know I'm not the best but at least if I never do anything else in this business, I have lived my dream. I have had the honor of being in the ring with a lot of my childhood heroes. The only thing that I was thinking about when I was working those matches is that I wish my father was there to see this. He would be so proud. But I had the privilege of fulfilling his dreams thru me. That was pay enough.

Now the money situation is really none of my business. But I will say my peace. I think that if someone is able to bring in hundreds of people for a show then they deserve their asking price if it's not outrageous. But there is not a single person in this area, with a couple of exceptions that have ever drawn a house on their name alone. So my question is. How in the hell can someone working the independents have a "guarantee" if they can't draw the house? I have never seen a building in Dyersburg fill up on the names of anyone around here. Hell, Shane Douglas was at the entertainment center and there was still room for more people. I have also never seen anyone in Ripley draw a full house on just their name. Not even Dundee or White. Now who in the hell has the right to have a guarantee if they can’t put asses in the seats. What? Are you worth a certain amount of money just because you think so? Not hardly. I may have not been to the mountain top, but neither have the majority of the workers in the West Tennessee area. A couple of low budget spots don’t count. I do what I am told and that’s that. I get my money, regardless of what it is, and I go on to the next show. If that’s a crime for not bitching and moaning about the amount of money I get then so be it. I'm doing what I love and that’s all that matters to me.

The talent pool in Tennessee is endless. There are a hell of a lot of talented guys and gals just waiting to get their shot. Then theirs some of the talent that think their hot stuff just because they have been granted a few spots and look down on others for not getting theirs. That is BullShit! Just because some talent has not gotten their chance to shine, does that make them less talented than anyone? No. Just because some people have been out of the country to wrestle, does that make then better? No. It may make them more experienced, but not better. Experience does not necessarily make someone better. There are guys that bust their asses for 20 or 30 years in this business that most people look down upon today. Many that does not meet the expectations of the current talent roster. Workers that think they are better than the ones that helped paved the way. Well that is bullshit in any aspect.

Just remember this; a lot of the guys from the Ripley locker room are originally from the Dyersburg locker room. They just left because they thought the grass was greener. Which in my opinion, it wasn't. So be careful of how you talk about talent pools in another locker room because that doesn’t look too good on the locker room they are working in right now. Regardless of how much money anyone makes. Regardless of where they go to wrestle. Regardless of whom they meet along the way. Everyone is equal in my opinion, some just more experienced, but no better. That is what is wrong with the independent scene now is that everyone is trying to compete. And for what? The independents might be a stepping stone to get to the top, but don’t let other workers be the stones you cast along the way.

Leonard Comments on Mo

----This letter came from Leonard Doan, who some of you are probably familiar with and some may not be. Doan has worked since 1980 in this area [as “Luscious” Leonard and The Night Hunter] doing indys for guys like Ron Spence and I seen him work for Reggie Montgomery and others. Here is what he had to say.

I just wanted to commend Mo on his observations. Certainly anyone who works at any level of pro wrestling wants to prosper financially. Unfortunately the reality is that most of the time that is not the case. The reality is that if a promoter is not able to show a minimal profit, or at the bare minimum to break even (hence not loosing with any regularity), they are forced to inevitably discontinue their promotion. Make no mistake, there are some excellent athletes/entertainers, even wrestlers in the Arkansas/Tennessee/ Mississippi area, but it is safe to say that less than 1% of them will ever make a living at it.

Now, it is time for my pet peeve. Wrestlers work the crowd, not the other wrestlers and promoters. Promoters look at your town or towns and realize that a loyal crew that loves the business will keep you in business for far longer than wrestlers that realize that you can be manipulated. There is no doubt hat some wrestlers are more talented than others, but with the exception of wrestling abroad, the WWE and perhaps TNA, wrestling is a slightly profitable hobby at best.

I have probably made nearly every mistake to be made as a promoter and a wrestler, but through the years I have seen them made by all others in this business. This is a continual learning experience, and I suggest that others in this business take this as a learning experience as well. In closing, whether or not you are making $1 or $1000, you should respect and love the business, but realize it is an opportunity to pursue your passion not an occupation.

Barbwire On Saturday Night!!

----I am for shoot excited about Saturday night’s show. This will be my first TLCW event and hoping it lives up to all the hype. As I have mentioned here, we plan on a DVD release of this show, so I am really hoping for some good matches. They are running a lot of radio promos that are supposed to start today for the show and I expect 200 fans or more. The one match that everyone is talking about though is the main event, so let’s take a look at the possible finishes.

#1: Dustin Starr beats Chris O’Neal sending O’Neal “out of town”. I have been told by more than one person that O’Neal is burned out and this would give him a chance to take some time off. O’Neal is a big time babyface in TLCW and has been a big part of the building of the promotion. No matter how Starr beats him though, O’Neal can come back after that “specified time” and he will still be hot.

#2: O’Neal beats Starr sending Starr “out of town”. If you know any of the background with the stories we have been running here on the site, then you know that Starr has been offered a job at NBW. Was this stip put in the match, so he can exit? I have been told that Starr has no plans to leave, but then I talk with someone else and they say, “Well you never know; do you??” Even though a lot of stuff that Starr has said on his site is shoot, this could also be a ready made angle with Starr pushing Mo around to fight him, since Starr is a “Smackdown superstar”.

----So, what is the finish?? Derrick King is telling everyone, “I don’t even know the finish yet.”. Either he has not decided or he is just kayfabing everyone. So what do I think?? Seriously I do not have the inside info for the finish and have presented everyone with what I know. I will be there live and have an Arena Report up as quick as I get back. My gut feeling is that Starr is winning, but I have no idea how it will set up for Starr’s next angle, which I believe will be with Stan Lee over the belt. Well, that is if Lee wins the belt. LOL If not, it will Starr vs Flash for the belt.

----I will return later today with “Shows for The Weekend” and “Barbwire on Saturday night”.

Sir Mo - NBW and The Wrestling Business In General Part III

----This is the third part of the series of letters I received from former WWE wrestler Sir Mo. He typed the last two letters in all caps. In geek talk that is him yelling at me, but I think he just got stuck on the ALL CAPS. Not sure though. LOL I will finish this all up tomorrow with a letter I got from another worker and some comments by me.

OH YEAH, AND LET ME ADD THIS WE DON`T GET CONCESSIONS IN THIS BUILDING. WE UNFORTUNATELY ONLY REAP THE BENEFITS FROM THE DOOR, SO THEREFORE WE DON`T HAVE THE LUXURY OF BEING ABLE TO USE CONCESSION STAND MONEY. THAT PART YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW.

AS FAR AS PAYING THE TALENT IN THE MANNER YOU SAY. I TOTALLY AGREE. MY IDEA WAS 25 DOLLARS PER GUY INITIALLY AND GIVING TOP TIER GUYS A LITTLE MORE. BUT WE HAVE TO GET TO THAT POINT. IT`S NOT MY SHOW, AND JEFF DOESN`T HAVE SOME MARK GIVING HIM MONEY TO SPREAD AROUND SOME OTHER PEOPLE MAY HAVE. SO HE HAS ONLY THAT WHICH COMES IN THE DOOR. I WILL SAY THIS EVERYONE ON OUR CREW GETS SOMETHING NO MATTER IF THEY ARE A STUDENT OR OTHERWISE. AND 9 OF THE LAST 10 WEEKS I HAVE GONE WITHOUT COLLECTING A DIME AND THAT`S A SHOOT, I PUT THAT ON MY KIDS. I MAKE MY MONEY DRIVING A TRUCK, NOT FROM WRESTLING. I DO IT NOW BECAUSE I LOVE DOING IT. I`M TRYING TO HELP GUYS LEARN ABOUT THE BUSINESS STUFF I DIDN'T KNOW, WHICH WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME LONGER LIFE IN WWF HAD I KNOWN MORE ABOUT THE BUSINESS.

ASK ANYONE WHO KNOWS ME, I TRY ALL THE TIME TO TEACH THE GUYS ABOUT THE BUSINESS, ANSWERING ANY QUESTIONS THEY MAY HAVE FOR ME, OR SHOWING THEM ANYTHING THEY ASK OF ME, AND NOT CHARGING 1 RED CENT FOR IT. I`M NOT THE ENEMY AS YOU ARE MAKING ME OUT TO BE. I POSE A QUESTION, ASK ANYONE WHO`S EVER BEEN IN ONE OF THE BIG TIME ORGANIZATIONS TO COME AND WORK A SHOW, AND SEE IF THEY WILL COME WITHOUT A GUARANTEED AMOUNT OF MONEY. I DO IT ALL THE TIME.

AS FAR AS GUYS WORKING SHOWS FOR FREE FOR ME AND ME POCKETING MONEY, I CAN HONESTLY GO TO MY GRAVE AND SAY IT`S NEVER HAPPENED. I HAVE SPENT COUNTLESS DOLLARS OUT OF MY POCKET IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET COMPANIES THAT I HAVE WORKED FOR RECOGNIZED BY WWE AND OTHER BIGGER COMPANIES, BY SPENDING MY OWN PERSONAL MONEY BRINGING IN NAMES LIKE SHANE DOUGLAS,TOM PRITCHARD AND COUNTLESS OTHERS TO GIVE THOSE VERY GUYS YOU MENTIONED AND OPPPORTUNITY TO BE SEEN BY PEOPLE IN POSITIONS TO GET THEM JOBS. IF IM THE BAD GUY, THEN IT`S BECAUSE PEOPLE DON`T KNOW THE TRUTH OR THE WHOLE STORY.

ASK RUDE, POKERFACE, ALAN STEEL, AND EVEN JON MICHAELS WHOS MADE COUNTLESS PHONE CALLS ON THEIR BEHALF TO GET THEM ON WWE SHOWS. I DON`T BENEFIT ANYTHING FROM THE THINGS I DO. TRUST ME MAN, IF THEY WERE DOING SHOWS FOR ME FOR FREE AND I WAS POCKETING ALL THE MONEY, THEN THERE WOULD BE NO WAY I WOULD BE BOOKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE, I`D STILL BEING RUNNING MY OWN THING. THE GUYS ALWAYS MADE MONEY EVEN WHEN I DIDN`T MAKE ANY. SO IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO PRINT WHAT YOU JUST SAID ABOUT ME POCKETING ALL THE MONEY THEN MY FRIEND FEEL FREE TO DO SO, BUT PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FACTS AND THE WHOLE STORY.

BIG EXAMPLE, I SPENT 5000 DOLLARS OF MY OWN MONEY RUNNING A SHOW, AND I PAIRED THE GUYS I THOUGHT HAD THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IT IN TNA, WITH TOP TNA TALENT. JASON REED AGAINST AJ STYLES, ALAN STEEL AGAINST JERRY LYNN, GOLDEN BOY AGAINST JOHNNY STORM AND SETH KNIGHT AGAINST SONNY SIAKI [pic to right] AS WELL AS MR. SHOWTIME AGAINST SHARKBOY. PAID FOR A PROFESSION PRODUCTION CREW TO FILM THE SHOW, AND HAVE IT ALL ON TAPE. EACH ONE OF THOSE GUYS, IF THEY WERE SMART SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THOSE MATCHES AND TAPES AND USED THEM TO CATIPULT THEM TO A HIGHER PLACE IN THIS BUSINESS. I BENEFITED NOTHING FROM THIS, I WANTED MY GUYS TO MAKE IT AND I TRIED TO PUSH THEM TOWARDS THE STARS. UNFORTUNATELY THEY DIDN`T SEE IN THEMSELVES WHAT I SAW IN THEM, AND SO THEY HAVE JUST SETTLED FOR HANGING AROUND WEST TN. AND IF THAT`S ALL THEY WANT FOR THEMSELVES, THEN THAT`S KOOL, I TOOK THE HINT A LONG TIME AGO, AND SO I STOP TRYING TO HELP MOTIVATE THEM TO STRIVE FOR SOMETHING HIGHER. IF I DIED TOMORROW I WILL DO IT KNOWING IN MY HEART OF HEARTS, I DID EVERYTHING IN MY POWER, MENTALLY FINANCIALLY TO HELP THE GUYS IN THIS AREA GET TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

RassleTube, RassleChronicle and Memphis Wrestling 10 Years Ago..

----I will be adding videos from the last three weeks of Memphis Wrestling to RassleTube in the next few days. Take a look!!

----RassleChronicle covers the results of RAW/Nitro 10 years ago. This week is posted. I have also added a Herb Kunze Wrestling Tidbits column that was published at this time.

10 Years ago in Memphis Wrestling........

USWA: The big news was that Jerry Jarrett sold his 50% of the company to Jerry Lawler, so Lawler now owned 100% of the promotion. Lawler was now running the business end of the promotion with Larry Burton, who was now general manager, and Elliot Pollock, who was the on-screen commissioner. On the weekend tv show, Del Rios (the Spellbinder) returned and joined the Nation of Domination, under his new ring name, Elijah. They were building up a Mo vs Mabel feud. Meltzer wrote, “Mo did an interview saying that he taught Mabel everything he knows, which is nothing I’d be bragging about.”

RassleBits: Gibson signs with WWE, Memphis ramblings, Hollywood Jimmy's board, Voting, Loose Cannon, Dustin Starr and XOW results

----This can only be good news for guys working this area. Gibson is very familiar with the talent here. From wrestlingobserver.com: Robert Gibson will be joining Steve Williams as a part-time trainer for WWE. The general schedule for them is to spend one week per month in either OVW or DSW and teach the students there hands-on. Also, if they do well in their roles, they'll be under consideration for jobs as road agents if spots open up. Mike Bucci (Simon Dean) pushed for the idea of using veterans who worked in several different places to come to development to teach the younger wrestlers.

----Slammer, who I believe is the indy wrestler by the same name, posted some interesting stuff about Memphis wrestling on Trent Van Drisse’s board. A lot of it has been covered on this site, but it did get people talking.

----Hollywood Jimmy’s board which usually filled with dumbasses has some guy in the last few days posting a bunch of stuff about Memphis wrestling. It has been really interesting and I even offered him a job as a columnist. This is also a few pages back [and usually hate no name guys], but some guy has predictions for 2007. Funny stuff.

----The 3rd day of “10 To Vote” things seem to have slowed down a bit in the voting. I would like to thank everyone that participated. I apologize to the people that have two computers in their home and can not vote, but once or two people and only vote once. That was the only way I could do it to keep people from cheating. And, the reason you can not look at the results but once when you vote is that I didn’t want it being close and then someone calling their buddy to vote for them. This is the only way it can be fair.

----Loose Cannon has a real good “Cannon’s Fire” reviewing 2006. He even put over this site as being part of the big news in this area. Wow!! LOL

----I will be having a look at the TLCW Barbwire “Loser Leave Town” tomorrow, but Dustin Starr has posted some thing over at his site about if he stays or if he goes. The bookers have made it fun for this Saturday night. If anyone from the Missouri bootheel is planning to go to attend the show, please drop me a line!! I will be there!!

----I got some XOW results from Saturday night [12.30.06] in New Albany, MS, but was told they were not sure if these were complete or not. So, here goes: Izzy Rotten beat Brett Michaels; Psycho beat Pappy to advance into the finals of the TV Title Tourny; Jay Webster beat Nick Grymes; “Pure Destruction” [Cody & Brody Hawk] vs Justin Rhodes/Bonecrusher ended in No Contest; Buzz Harley beat Colton Anderson; Cassanova Kidd beat Dirty Sanchez & Little Steve Davis in a triple threat and PD/Danny B/Tommy Knox vs Bonecrusher/Rhodes/JR Mauler/Kross ended in No Contest when the dressing room emptied…I was told the SGWA vs XOW feud is going to be good for XOW. They drew about 70 paid with a gate in the $350 range.

RassleReview: "Heroes of World Class" by Mark Bravura

"Wrestling is about dragons and dragonslayers and the
Von Erichs were the Dragonslayers." Gen. Scandar Akbar

I hated the Von Erichs. Hated them. From the first
time I ever saw World Class Championship Wrestling at
my grandparents house I hated them. I have no idea
why. At the time I was a little Hulkamaniac. I loved
all the babyfaces. I remember being FURIOUS with Ron
Garvin when he turned on Dusty Rhodes. I was a the
ultimate mark little kid. Except when it came to the
Von Erichs. For some reason I hated them. My
grandmother on the other hand loved them. All of them.
To her these good looking, young, Christian boys
defending themselves and their beliefs against Scandar
Akbar's monsters and "those dirty Rednecks" the
Freebirds were the ultimate good guys. She loved them.
She was only one of literally tens of millions of fans
around the entire world who did.

I knew that World Class was big. It was on ESPN
everyday when I was a kid. Other than WWE and WCW,
I've probably seen more World Class shows than any
other company. All of us kind of know the story of the
company and how it exploded, but the reality of it is
even more incredible than the legends.

I'm not going to go through the documentary piece
by piece and write a traditional review. Instead, I
wanted to focus on what struck me in how World Class
was booked and how that relates to the current scene
in the WWE and on the indies. First, I'll just say
this about the documentary. It's a great story. It has
some weaknesses when it comes to production, but the
range of interviews that are featured and the insight
some great figures in wrestling history provide is
more than worth the price. I have the original version
that was released by Right Here Pictures. Now a
Director's Cut is being released by Big Vision
Entertainment with additional footage and I'm sure
I'll buy that too. I can't recommend it enough.
Apparently the WWE will be releasing their own version
of the History of World Class at some point in the
future, but I guarantee it won't hold a candle to this
version.

The day I got Heroes of World Class in the mail WWE
24/7 also came online with my cable company. I must've
watched 9 hours of wrestling that day. The thing that
struck me most about watching all that truly classic
footage was how simple everything was. The World Class
formula was the same as the Memphis formula that was
the same as the WWE's Bruno, Pedro, and Backlund
formula. A charismatic babyface champion taking on the
monster of the week or month who was brought in by a
charismatic manager who could talk people into the
seats. Memphis had Lawler and Hart. WWE has Albano,
Grand Wizard, and Blassie. World Class had Gary Hart
and Scandar Akbar. This was the base of their
business. The thing that WCCW did that some of the
other territories didn't is they recognized when they
had something different that was going to pop and they
went with it.

WCCW's two biggest drawing programs went against
that mold. Instead of the Von Erichs against the
monster of the week, it was the Von Erichs vs. The
Freebirds and later the Dynamic Duo [Gino Hernandez/Chris Adams].
The precise reason these feuds popped the territory is BECAUSE
THEY WERE DIFFERENT. You have your base business. This
is your core and you always maintain this. You should
never ever do anything to insult or risk this core
audience, but when you have something GO WITH IT. That
doesn't mean hotshot six-billion things. You have to
build to these big deals because if you have six
hundred big deals then none of them are big deals. One
of my biggest pet peeves about wrestling on every
level right now is the near constant "devastating
injury." You see it on impact, wwe, indies,
everywhere. And everyone wonders why none of them get
over. Why should they we see them in every segment and
what's more the guy who's supposedly badly injured is
coming back next week so why should anyone care. It's
the same thing with big events. At some point you have
to bring it down and build.

Both the Freebird and Dynamic Duo built for months
and MADE SENSE on both sides. Both sides could
consievably be seen as being right. They had a point.
When the birds turned on Kerry they thought that Kerry
had hit Hayes. In fact, Flair had caused Kerry to run
into Hayes, but the birds didn't know that. THEIR
ACTIONS MADE SENSE. What's more that one slam of a
cage door led to years of HUGE business. Why? Cause
that shit never happened. The WWE does it every week
so it doesn't mean shit.

With the Dynamic Duo, Chris Adams felt like he was
passed over and pushed to the background because he
wasn't a Von Erich. He got sick of it so he went with
Gary Hart. That shit makes sense. People can
understand that. They might not like it, but they can
understand it. That's HUGE. And again it led to
ridiculous business.

How often can you say a WWE angle makes sense? How
many angles do you see on indie shows that make sense?
Managers, commissioners, owners, whatever wrestling in
main events for titles. Why? It doesn't make any
sense. Random turns just because you don't have enough
heels or babies or whatever? Why? It should make
sense. If you can't explain the reason in one sentence
it's too fucking complicated. Keep it simple.

Another thing I noticed about WCCW was how well
they protected their talent. I never saw David Von
Erich wrestle. It's always been said that he was the
best worker of the brothers, but really I wouldn't
call Kerry or Kevin and definitely not Mike good
workers in terms of having great matches or giving
good interviews, but they were never exposed. And they
drew. They drew huge because of how they were used.
They were never put in a position to look bad. They
were never made to look weak. And most importantly
they were never made to look dumb. PEOPLE WILL NOT
CHEER A DUMBASS BABYFACE. The only time I remember
Kevin being fooled was when he offered to forgive
Chris Adams if he dropped Gary Hart, but even then he
came off as heroic.

Granted sometimes Fritz may have taken protecting
his boys too far and keeping them too strong. I had
forgotten that even after Gordy slammed the cage on
Kerry's head that Kerry didn't do the job for Flair
and it really hurts the match obviously it didn't hurt
the drawing power of the feud. One of the other major
angles of the period, Michael Hayes running in on a
Freebirds/Von Erichs match dressed as Santa Claus is
remembered as this awesome angle and it was good, but
even that didn't lead to a Von Erich jobbing. But
obviously it worked for them. They knew where their
money was coming from and they kept them strong.

There are a million lessons to be learned from the
rise and fall of WCCW. Like I said I won't go into the
drugs and the family problems and all that stuff.
Watch the documentary and you'll see all that, but to
me the underlying lessons of how to book a territory
to keep it up at a certain level and most importantly
pop the territory really stick out.

Sir Mo - NBW and The Wrestling Business In General Part II

----I had planned to just print Mo’s letter and comment on it. But, I had second thoughts and wanted to write to him what was on my mind. He responded in three more letters and enjoyed reading every word. If you are an indy guy in this area or any area, you need to take a minute and read what Mo says. Whether you agree or disagree, this is the way promoters and bookers look at talent at this level.

Here is my letter....

A few things I really would like to clear up before I put this on the site though. I am being told that you get the money to pay the boys. You give them what you think they deserve and the rest goes into your pocket. I have been booker before and have done it this way also. I hardly ever went home with money no matter what we drew. Now this may be something that you just say, "That is none of your business", and I will respect that. But, I do know if the Dustin Starr deal would have went thru just Jeff, then he would have hired Starr. It went thru you, [which you state that there is no sense in paying x amount unless the person has proven they can draw] and now Starr is being offer lots less. Give him the ball and let him try it, but why would he want to leave TLCW to make the same amount in D-burg, when he is surrounded by such good talent??

I disagree on the point of all those guys being just worth $10 or $15. They might not be "names", but if they are drawing houses like they are doing now, then they are worth more than $15. As a group that promotion has drawn close to 1200 fans in the last two months. $6,000 and more considering the concession of that kind of crowds. $25 each at least for the whole group.

My thoughts are this -- if you are booking and giving x amount to all the boys -- say $150 and you get rest of the gate or if you and Jeff get rest of the gate, then that is where the mistake is being made. I do not feel that you can just build a promotion or business on word of mouth or "building the crowd and talent". I think you should sink every extra amount on posters and radio to get the crowd up and present them with good roster of talent.

Do you not think that if you sunk $300 a week on just talent -- 10 guys at $30 a piece that the crowd would then go up because you are giving them quality matches?? I personally think it would but really I have never had the opportunity to try it. You get the gates up higher and then you are talking about $400 a week with adding 3 more to your crew with everyone making $30. At this point you have 13 guys that are making steady money that will be happy and you have good shows. Since you as the booker have built the promotion, then yes at this point all is well and anything over $400 should be yours and Jeff should keep concession sales. Let's say then you are doing even better and it bumps up to $600 a week. You get $200 a week and you deserved it. The gate then goes up to $800 a week -- at that point you pay yourself $300 a week and give your 13 person crew a raise to $40 a week and they are even happier. If someone no-shows, then that money is just given to rest of the guys.

Is that just pipe dream above or what??

I have no ill feelings at all towards you. You have always shown me respect and do the same for you. But many of the boys in this area hold hard feelings towards you for working so many shows for free and feeling like you pocketed the money. Now, most of them needed that certain experience and probably deserved no money. But, at this point guys like Simon, CJ, Psycho, Seth, TGB, Jon Michael, DK all deserve more than the usual $10 or $15 payoff that everyone thinks they deserve.

Mo responds…..

I think you missed it Brian. I actually don’t get paid for what I do in Dyersburg. It truthfully doesn’t make enough money to pay me to do what I do, and deal with what I deal with. I actually said that I think Dustin should come in and show he can help draw money. We have what we call a downside guarantee. And you can call Dustin, Rude, Pokerface and others that I have called. And if they will discuss it for you, then that`s kool. But the guarantee goes up each week that they stay, if they are putting more asses in seats. Unfortunately I have the task of trying to make sure the show goes on. It will not if we can’t pay for the building, and other expenses.

You can ask Jeff if you like; I don’t ask for a guaranteed anything, in fact call and ask Kelly Warner how I donated food for one of their last benefit shows. And even when I worked for them in the past I never asked for a guaranteed amount of money. Even LaFonce will tell you the same. My policy has always been, and you can even call Rodney Grimes, my policy again as I was about to say, has always been, if I help your show out, all I ask is you show me some love and take care of me. If that was 10 dollars then 10 dollars is what I got. Ask around no one you will ever talk to will tell you I charged an ungodly amount of money to come and do something I love so dearly. So the amount really is not the issue, as much as, are you gonna come to the show and help draw a crowd, and do whatever is asked of you to do so. BT you can ask Jeff if you like, I really don’t mind but I don’t ask him for a guaranteed anything.

But for the record, Alan Steele is my boy, so no matter what happens, I try to get him what he ask for, simply because I’m trying to help this guy make it in the business, and he’s been a great friend, and appreciates all that I’ve ever done for him. I’m not saying that guy are not worth 10 or 15 dollars, I’m saying this is the Independent scene, call and ask Mick Foley or Steve Austin and some of those guys, how many times they’ve worked someone and was given 5 10 or 15 dollars. It’s just part of paying dues, and I feel like these guys these days don’t understand that concept. If I’m wrong then I’m sorry but it’s the truth.

The Ratings Are In!! Last Two Weeks of 2006

----Memphis Wrestling finishes with a great rating and an average rating with two of the worst shows they produced this year. The 12.23.06 finish overall with a 4.1 [68,249 viewers] and this past Saturday’s show did a 3.5 [57,928 viewers]

----The 12.23.06 show opened with a 3.4 [56,263 viewers] for interviews and then they 3 tag team match. The 2cnd quarter started with them show the Brick angle on White, Starr/White vs R&R Express and ending with the DK interview. That quarter jumped 12,818 viewers scoring 4.2 [69081 viewers]. The next quarter pretty much stayed at 4.2 [69,414 viewers] jumping 333 viewers for DK vs Donovan match with Dotson angle, Koko interview and Lawler interview. The 4th then finished big with 6 man tag and Lawler/Nunnery singing with Nate angle. This quarter jumped 8, 989 viewers scoring a 4.7 [78,403 viewers]. The show ended with 22,140 more viewers than when it started.

----The 4.1 rating surprised me going into it, because of the 2.3 rating from the 12.16.06 show. The only good thing on the whole show was the Fire/Flame/Jethro vs PP/Tatt2 bout and that was seen by 78,403 viewers!! The ratings were a total upward climb from start to finish with no negative jump and that big 22,140 viewers for the last quarter. All in all the crew should be very happy with this rating.

----The show 12.30.06 opened with a 3.7 [62,090 viewers] for the Jackie Fargo interview, Maclin saying “kayfabe” and ended in the middle of the Kaufman/Hart interview. 10,654 viewers turned off the show after that quarter. The second quarter scored a 3.1 [51,436 viewers] with rest of the Kaufman/Hart interview, Lawler interview from home and Maclin playing pool with his kids. The next quarter went up to 3.5 [58,927 viewers] adding 7,491 viewers with Lawler vs Hogan and the Maclin/Koko clips. The 4th started with more Maclin/Koko clips, more old clips and Corey finishes up with DVD plug. That quarter finished with a 3.6 [59,093 viewers] adding 166 more viewers. The show ended with 2997 less viewers than turned on the show.

----This rating was pretty much average. It was funny to see 10,654 viewers turn off the show after watching Jackie Fargo and the start of the Kaufman/Hart angle. When you promote something as “Best of 2006”, you do not throw a bunch of 80’s stuff on the show unless it is Lawler vs Hogan, which jumped 7,491 viewers even though it has been shown a million times. There were only 2997 viewers that lost interest from start to finish, which is not bad.

----I will take a look at the full year in ratings with best show, worst show, night time ratings and much more to be posted in “Yearbook 2006 – Fact & Figures”.

Letter From Sir Mo - NBW and The Wrestling Business In General

----Sir Mo [Bobby Horne] sent the following letter to this site. It is a very interesting read. I responded to some of these comments in a letter to Mo. He responded back. I will be posting all of that in the next two days as part of a Three-part series. Also, if any of the area workers would like to respond to what Mo has said, then please e-mail me your comments. I plan to finish the article on Thursday with comments.

----For those in this area and wrestling fans in general should know, Sir Mo was a fixture in the WWE for over 2 years debuting July 19, 1993 on RAW with “Men On A Mission” (Mable & Mo w/Oscar) defeating Rich Myers & Hank Harris. “Men on The Mission held the WWE Tag Team Tiles for two days in England when they defeated “The Quebecers” [Pierre/Jacques] with JohnnyPolo [Raven] on March 29, 1994 and would lose them on March 31st back to the “Quebecers” in England. Mo participated in a some of the major PPV including Survivor Series ’93 [he wore Doink makeup], Wrestlemania 10, King of the Ring [managing Mable where he lost in ’94, but won in ’95 with Mo] and a couple of “In Your House” PPVs. Mo’s last PPV was Survivor Series ’95 where he managed King Mable as part of the “The Royals” with Jerry Lawler/Isaac Yankem/HHH. My records have this last big match in WWE being on the November 27, 1995 edition of RAW being defeated by The Undertaker.

----Mo is currently the New Blood Wrestling booker, which runs shows every Saturday night in Dyersburg, TN. He has been a fixture in the West TN area for at the last 6 years and has worked with almost every guy in this area as either a booker or wrestler.

First BT I have great respect for you and have always shown you a level of respect since meeting you. I had hoped that that same level of respect you shared for me. I was very disappointed last week when I read your website for the first time, and there were comments in regards to the Dustin Starr situation on your site that were somewhat disturbing to me. First of all, Jeff McDonald and I didn’t have a problem with coming to terms, about the money for Dustin Starr. I spoke with Jeff and he explained to me that Dustin might consider coming in for a certain amount of money. My answer to Jeff was, that I felt like Dustin would be a great acquisition to what we were trying to do in Dyersburg, but that I felt like he should be willing to come in and show his drawing potential, in order to prove he was worth the kind of money he was requesting.

Our Show is very New, and like with everything New, you have to build a following, which I believe we are doing every week, which was evident 2 days before Christmas when we had our best house ever, and last night at New Blood Eve, when we had to put out many more chairs than we normally do. Don’t get me wrong, Dustin is a great guy, and great worker, and he knows how I feel about him. We’ve done it all together, but I’m in the position of trying to help Jeff grow a business and I from past experiences I have learned that trying to shot gun a show, by spending money you don’t have, puts you out of business a lot quicker, than, just sitting back and riding the waves, and seeing how the storm is gonna turn out.

In regards to your comment that TLCW has the best talent in the area, my comment is this, and I’m sure everyone who respects the business and knows the business will agree. Not everyone is born a great worker, and not everyone becomes a great worker, but in all of us, we had to learn to crawl before we could walk. And so I say, that yes TLCW has more experienced and more developed guys working for them, but that my talent pool is no less than their talent, just less experienced. And experience comes with time, and in Time they will be as good if not better than the talent that is in TLCW.

And as we all grow older, our talent diminishes, and the younger guys, that are coming up as we grow older, will certainly out work us in the end, so no they don’t have the best talent, they simply have more experience. But I will say this, my guys though they don’t have the experience of the Posse, A Jon Michael, Chris O’Neal, Seth Knight, Derrick King, etc they still go out and give 110% of themselves, and strive to put on the best show they possibly can, and I promise you, there is no fighting and bitching in our dressing room, about who’s the better worker, or any of that crap. And this part you can quote me on if you like. I’m sure no body gives a damn about what I say or think, but no one in the TLCW locker room with the exception of Flash Flanagan and Bill Dundee even have the right to consider themselves someone in this business because they’ve never done anything that will go down in the wrestling history books, or anything that makes any significant difference to anyone outside of the West TN area. Make a phone call up north and mention some of the names of guys around this area, and see if any of those names ring a bell, I doubt it. Hell, I’ve been to the show and my name probably doesn’t ring a bell, but I’m ok with that. But are all those other so called Superstars, that ask for unheard of amounts of money for doing these local rinky dinky independent shows even worth the 5 or 10 dollars they are getting, much less 40 or 50 that they are asking for.

My final thoughts are this, if they even thought they would make it to the big time one day, and then they would realize that it’s about getting experience now, and not trying to get rich off the Independents. Guys all I ever wanted for you was to learn the business and keep your heads on tight, and not have these I’m a Superstar attitude, so you don’t make the mistake when you do make it, of fucking things up for yourselves because of your unprofessional attitude.

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton Makes Statement about Mid-South Coliseum

“The Mayor spent most of his time talking about a new football stadium at the Fairgrounds.

The Mayor said he will request City Council support for a new 50-thousand seat football stadium that would replace the Liberty Bowl.

The Mayor told the crowd of city staffers and elected officials he believes the Mid-South Coliseum should be torn down.

He said it is a waste of money to fix up two old buildings, the Coliseum and the Liberty Bowl.

"We need a new stadium. We need a gateway, an improved entrance. We need to rid the community of an antiquated coliseum that costs money," said Herenton.

The Mayor says his proposed 50-thousand seat arena could be paid for in part with private funds using naming rights.

Council approval is needed to get the project going.

Several Council members weighed in on the Mayor's proposal.

"We can't afford it. We have a Pyramid that's empty. We have a coliseum that's empty. We haven't paid for the Pyramid yet. We have a FedEx Forum that still isn't paid for. We have crime out of control. We need to get our fiscal house in order before we start a huge project," said City Councilwoman, Carol Chumney.”

----My main thoughts on this are from comments made by Chumney ---They have all these arenas, but no one is supporting them -- why would they want another one??

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

RassleResults: NBW Dyersburg, TN 12.30.06 KILO WINS THE TITLE!!!

---- Jeremy Moore by DQ over Bigg Money Gripp; Strap Match- Gunner Thompson def. A.W. James ;Big Red def. Tim Edwards; Jerry Weezy def. Loose Cannon; Fatal 4 Way “Risk Taker” Championship Match ended w/ the belt being held up with Gaylon Ray vs Jeremy Moore vs Phoenix X vs Gryffon X and in the Main Event: NBW Heavyweight Championship Match- Kilo beat Tank to win the title.

---- 90 to 95 paid with over 100 in the building with a gate close to $500...Show opened with Sir Mo talking. Then Commissioner Allen Walker said the match between AW James and Gunner Thompson would be a fans strap match, and the loser left for 30 days. It was announced that Kilo was hurt and that the match wouldn’t happen, but Kilo came out and still wanted the match. Tank came out, so Kilo said he would sign a contract that would leave only himself responsible for what happened to him. So Tank signed it and then hit Kilo w/ the clipboard [Coach BT!!!] and signed it in blood, w/ faces making the save....Moore cut some of BM Gripp’s hair during their match and crowd popped big. “Cash Flow” made the save for Gripp as they beat up Moore...Edwards challenged anybody in the back for a No DQ match and Big Red came out to answer the challenge...The strap match had only women marks around the ring with straps...In the “Risk Taker” match, the belt is being held up because Gaylon Ray had both arms across Team X, but Moore was pinning Gaylon. One ref raised Moore's hand and the other raised Ray's hand. Crowd was very hot for this with chants going for Gaylon and Moore as who the crowd wanted the winner to be. Moore and Ray were shoving and the ref were into it with each other. So next week Moore vs. Ray for the title, except Ray will have his own ref and Moore will have his own ref! This match was crazy with people flying everywhere, Gaylon flew off the top out on the floor on Moore and Gryffon X...This match went into the crowd and outside, and moore siplexed pheonix x on the stage where the announcers stand is, then pheonix dived off the stage on the others,.. lots of high flying, even a tower spot w/ a superplex, german suplex, powerbomb! crowd was into this match. In the main event, Tim Edwards entering the ring with everyone thinking it was going to hit Kilo with a chair, but he hit Tank. Not sure if that is leading to a Tank or Edwards babyface turn. Good end to the feud though...I was told that the crowd was real hot all night and the show had a “big show” feel.

RassleResults: MEW Batesville, AR 12.30.06

----15 Man Battle Royal – Winner get MEW Title Match – Gravedigger threw The Lineman over to win; “Crazy” Luke Graham Jr/Scotty Graham beat Rozzi/Idol Bane; MEW Tag Team Title Match: “The Playboy Club” [Ray Ray/Tommy Wayne] beat and retain the belts over “Righteous Punishment” [Byg Daddy and Jack”Lockdown” Johnson]; MAW Cruiserweight Title Match: Kid Krazzy beat “Hot Rod” John Ellison with Johnny Harper to retain the belt and in the Main Event: MAW Title Match: Casino Kid beat Matt Boyce [pic above ] to retain the belt.

----This show drew 243 fans...I was told that this group actually has sponsors that pay for the talent, so they put the show on for FREE. One of their big sponsors is Po Boy Furniture...I commented last week is was all about their concession money not knowing about the sponsors. But, I bet they had a huge concession profit on a show like this.

RassleResults: TLCW Ripley, TN 12.30.06 - Loser Leave Town Signed!!!

----TGB beat ‘Lil Chris; Tatt2 beat Jameson; Krisis vs Cruz-- Shannon Lee/Tucker came out– all fight to back; “Jawbreaker” Jones beat Simon Reed; “Black Out Squad”[Oz/Bishop] beat Tim Alfonzo/SethKnight and in the Main Event: “Hot Topic” [Stan Lee/Derrick King] vs Flash Flanagan/”Rockin”Randy ended in No Contest.

----Gate was in the $800 range with 160 people in attendance...“The Golden Boy” Greg Anthony had put a portrait up of himself earlier in the night to be revealed for his “Golden Circle”, but Simon Reed had painted a big P on it. When TGB came out for his “Circle”, the “Posse” were outside the ring laughing at him. He later used a skateboard to help Jones beat Reed. I think TGB might be watching Eddie Gilbert tapes...They did a contract signing with Dustin Starr/Chris O’Neal. Starr did not want to agree to a barbwire match, but finally O’Neal presented an “incentive” as if he lost he would leave town. Starr signed and agreed with O’Neal pointing out after the signing – if you lose you leave town also. Crowd was real hot for this. There is a lot going on backstage with what the result of this match will be?? I will have an analysis of it later this week...Brian Steele with Rick The Stick did an angle as he came out as the singing cowboy. Steele is a good singer for shoot. Buckwheat came out and told him that they sucked...BO Squad were putting Alfonzo/Knight on stretchers when “Picture Perfect” made the save...No finish on the main with everyone jumping in...Matches for 1.06.07 – the first big show of the new year - Triple Threat for Jr Title – Tatt2 vs Randy vs DK; TGB vs Simon Reed; Ambulance Match: PP vs BO; TLCW Title Match: Lee vs Flash; Hardcore Match with Cruz vs Krisis vs Tucker vs Shannon Lee and Main Event: “Barbwire Loser Leave Town” Match: Starr vs O’Neal...The barbwire will be outside the ropes and is designed to keep people in and keep Starr/O’Neal in the ring. It is not the typical no ropes barbwire that many of the promotions use these days...I will be at the show and it should be released on DVD on 1.24.07.
