Memphis Wrestling TV Report 8.16.08

----Corey Maclin opens the show saying he is Atlanta, GA to talk with Buff Bagwell. Video was shaky. Show then opens with Jerry Lawler and Corey Maclin. They talk about the show being listed as “paid programming” and such. It is listed as “Memphis Wrestling” on Direct TV this week.

----Maclin/Lawler talk about Cody Rhodes/Ted Dibiase and tagging with Jim Duggan. Jim Duggan vs Executioner #2 with Big Daddy. This is also from a New England Championship Wrestling DVD – they have featured matches from this area for all three weeks. Match was boring, but crowd was hot.

----Maclin/Lawler go over the lineup for the Delta Fair show: Lawler vs Bagwell, Brian Christopher vs Chris Masters [just added to show], Eugene, “Too Kool 2” [Tim Grind/Flex], Koko Ware, Mr. Hughes, Derrick King/Johnny Dotson vs “Los Locos”, Kid Kash and “Nature Boy” Kevin White. Solid line up for the show.

----Derrick King/Johnny Dotson interview talking about beating “Los Locos” for the OVW Southern Tag Team Titles. “Los Locos” interview airs next.

----Kid Kash/Kevin White vs Pat Tanaka/Koko Ware from Autozone Park. Kash does phone interview with Maclin during the match. From that match to TK2 vs Kash/Koko from last year. Kash says he will face anyone.

----“Wrestling Professor” and Guy Coffee join the show. Mr. Coffee says he has been involved in wrestling in Memphis since 1953. Wow! 10.19.85 is the date – Bill Dundee turns on Lawler angle – involving the “Fabulous Ones” [Steve Keirn/Stan Lane]. Dundee is so good here. Dundee puts his hair on the line on TV. Finish not shown, but Dundee won the Southern Title that day.

----Maclin interviews Bagwell from his home. Camera work on this was horrible. It made me dizzy. Bagwell talks about being a big Lawler fan. Maclin says that Bagwell wants to win, so he can go back to New York. Bagwell says he is 38 years old and still in shape.

----Listed as “Northeast Wrestling” [is this the same place??] – Jerry Lawler vs Ricky Landell. They bill him as being Buddy Landell’s nephew. Landell starts heat with foreign object. He continues to hide it and works it the whole match. Was he train by Don Bass?? Lawler gets object uses it on him, pulls down strap and piledrives him. Not all of it was shown.

----Chris Masters interview airs next. Masters promises the “Master-lock”. Brian Christopher interview next. Brian talks about Scotty coming to be his partner again.

----Maclin/Lawler close the show putting over the Delta Fair show again.

NOTES

----They did a good job putting over the show coming up to Delta Fair this coming Saturday night in Memphis, TN. Show is free with fair admission, so this is a SOLD show…Duggan was wearing those dreaded blue shorts. I just have a fear of “something” falling out of those. Ugh!... Maclin talked about having a special guest for Lawler, but they never had anyone??...Be sure to vote in the Memphis Wrestling TV Poll for this week. If you do not receive the show on local channels in your area, then visit the site on Tuesday as the whole show is posted on www.rasslinriotonline.com.

A Piece of my Mind August 22, 2008 by "The Big Cheese" Sal Corrente

Well WWE creative strikes again first they let Trevor Murdoch go and now they let Stevie Richards go. How in the world can someone stand up proudly and say there is no room in our company for people like these two men. I have always been a fan of Stevie Richards. I ran into him one day at a gym and introduced myself. He let me know that he already knew me as “The Big Cheese” Sal Corrente. I asked him how he knew me and he said that we used to be on shows together. I guess this age old veteran didn’t remember the young up and comer. I told my old Rat Patrol partner “Carolinas Own” David Isley about it and he didn’t seem to remember either.

I may not have remembered Stevie from the old days but these days he is very much on my mind when I think of guys with nothing but TALENT. This guy needs WWE creative to entertain like most people need a third arm and with a sixth finger on all three of them. I would be embarrassed to let guys like Stevie and Trevor go. I hope that TNA has the sense to take both of these guys I realize that TNA can’t take everyone that WWE is to incompetent to continue to employ and they shouldn’t. With that being said they should certainly take these two guys and let them entertain people. Isn’t it time for a Blue World Order Reunion to take place. I think a great place for it would be in Orlando, doesn’t that sound reasonable? Well we can all wait to see how it all plays out. I will wait to see the next brilliant move by WWE creative. Hurry up guys I’m always anxious to discover a new way to do something wrong.

I cannot understand how guys like Trevor and Stevie can be let go and the word is on the street that Gail Kim is headed back to WWE. The WWE needs another diva like they need a hole in the head. I realize Gail can work a little but as far as the WWE diva division is concerned that’s like throwing a bucket of water on a forest fire.

A few months back I wrote about a guy named Matt Holder who runs show in North Carolina. I wrote how he improperly advertised my friend Jimmy Hart and Stan Lane. There were some in the business who came to the defense of Matt Holder although I knew he had been involved in questionable things all along. I realize my word was questioned but I stood behind my opinions and my friends Jimmy and Stan. Well now I hear rumblings that there more situations with Matt Holder in question. It is a shame that people like Matt Holder are allowed so many opportunities to take advantage of good people. At this point caveat emptor applies “Let the buyer beware”.

I was working a show one night in Brooklyn or Staten Island it was a WWF event and Pedro Morales was the agent that night. I was given a match to referee between my good buddy Sylvester Ritter (The Junkyard Dog and Hercules Hernandez. The finish was a roll up where Hernandez pulled the tights on JYD. I was somewhat new in the business and I was not an “in charge” as I am now in the ring. These guys got to close to the ropes and were actually “out of the ring”. Well I positioned myself as best I could to make sure it wasn’t obvious that I knew they were under the ropes. I knew it was a bad deal but that was the finish that was laid out and I didn’t want to stop the finish. The guys could have easily I told me to stop counting I was right on top of them. Well when we got in the back Pedro Morales ripped me a new asshole. I knew Pedro from hanging around and he knew me. I never cared for him very much anyway he has always been a pretty self absorbed guy. He went on and on and on yelling at me in front of everyone. It took JYD finally to stand up for me and say Pete stop yelling at the kid it’s not his fault for him to stop screaming. It showed me what a small man Pedro really was he said nothing to anyone else but he picked me. I was a one hundred and eighty pound referee who was there without The Samoans. It was a rare occurrence for me to be there without those guys. It was a few minutes out of my life but it stayed with me all these years. It’s amazing to me what a small guy a former world champion can be in my eyes.

This photo was taken at Afa "The Wild Samoans" home in Bethlehem, PA. He has recently relocated to the Orlando Fl area and has opened another wrestling school in that area. He will also promote shows there has had his first one coming up in the near future. This photo is of course Hulk Hogan along with independent wrestler and Hillbilly Jim look alike Yukon Jack. In the background is a very young Rikishi. I was asked to post this promo for his first Florida event. There have been many people to come through The Wild Samoan Pro Wrestling Training Center and I am sure there will be many more

This has been a piece of my mind

The King' Shane Williams defeated new arrival Zach Murtaugh following a pin from a piledriver. Shane seemed to be toying around at first but eventually quit the act and got serious and finished things. Then he got the mic and talked about him being the new legend at the fleatorium and not to worry aobut Jeff Anderson but Anderson was there and came running in and gave everyone a piece of his mind that him being banned is a load of bull but still got escorted from the building afterwards. Then Shane said because he's a legend he wanted another match from anybody that wanted a shot which surprisingly saw Chase Owens answer the challenge but he got mugged by Shane when getting in the ring but managed to turn things around until the King got control of the match back and planted Owens with a piledriver.

The Big Gun' Robbie Race def. Edward Idol by countout after Idol walked out citing that Robbie and referee Dr Tom Young were cheaters. Robbie called Idol back and issued a challenge for next week where things would be even: A no referee, lumberjack strap match that Edward ended up accepting.

The Power TRIP defeated the "Hoodrats" (according to Donovan) of Shawn Streets & Johnathan MacMurray to retain the EWP Tag Team Titles after Rip pinned J-Mac following their rac/neckbreaker finishing move. (Which I'm dubbing The Killswitch)

Jason Maxx defeated the Menace in a hard hitting match after delivering the Roll of the Dice (spinning cutter). Menace brought out some new submissions and strikes in the match but Jason brought some new moves to his arsenal with an Exploder and the Convict Crossface. ™

Keith Knox got a schoolboy roll-up on Beau James to win the "LoserGets 10 Lashes" match. Before any leather met Beau James skin, Kole Layton King, Chase Owens and Sigmon ran in to try and attack Keith but he fended them off with the belt after getting some licks in on them.

In what was supposed to be a match for the EWP Championship (that Beau James weaseled to wave the match to a non-title one) Wayne Adkins pinned Sigmon after a crossbody off the second rope. Though afterwards Sigmon, Beau, KLK and Chase Owens started to beat on Wayne and just as they were about to do a spike piledriver on him Keith Knox made the save with a boot and the belt from earlier to clear the ring. After some talking next week there will be a Bunkhouse Brawl between the team of Sigmon & Beau James VS Keith Knox & Wayne Adkins with 2 poles up in the corners. One pole will have a leather belt for whoever garbs it to use as they please. In the other corner, will be a contract for an EWP Championship match, if Wayne or Keith gets it they receive a title match if Beau or Sigmon retrieve the contract neither Keith nor Wayne get any kind of match against Beau & Sigmon ever again.

RIP: Sonny "Roughouse" Fargo

I've seen it listed on a few websites tonight that Sonny "Roughouse" Fargo passed away around 9pm Wed. Not a lot of info on it, but I have heard that over the past few years Sonny was having serious complications from diabetes.

For many years Sonny worked as a referee in the Mid-Atlantic states for Jim Crockett Promotions. Whenever he’d get a vacation, he would show up in Memphis to help his brother, Jackie Fargo.

I can remember when Jackie Fargo would warn his opponents that they were in for some trouble because he was going to go check Sonny out of the “nuthouse”, bring him down to the ring that Monday night and let him loose. Sonny always had the Memphis fans laughing.

"What Memphis Watches" by Ron Guidry

Memphis Wrestling has to be happy this week after it saw it’s rating jump up almost half a point. While that doesn’t sound like much, it’s a step in the right direction. If it continues that “half a point a week” trend after 2 months that will be a 4 point rise in their number and MW and Ch. 50 will be ecstatic. I hope that they start taping some new shows as opposed to sitting in studio showing old matches. I don’t think the fans will stick around if they don’t get back to a traditional wrestling show.

Poor TNA! Their downward slide continues this week as they drop over a half a point from last week. The good thing is that they gained viewers as the show went on.

Both WWE shows had substantial jumps in their numbers this past week. Smackdown was up 1.5 points and RAW was up almost 2 points. With that said, I amazed, stunned and astonished that their numbers were up. The Olympics have been drawing incredible numbers here locally as well as nationally. It would only make sense that when you have so many people tuning into the Olympics that the wrestling shows numbers would be down. For Smackdown and RAW to actually improve their ratings is an incredible feat.

Just to give you an example of how well the Olympics are drawing, Friday night when Michael Phelps swam for his 7th gold medal that quarter hour pulled a 23.3 rating (377,576 viewers). Saturday night when he swam in the relay for his 8th and final gold medal that quarter hour drew a 29.6 (479,688 viewers). The Olympics’ numbers during Impact, Smackdown and Raw have been averaging anywhere between an 18 to 20 rating. Powerful numbers!

If you have any questions or comments just email me at: rpg187@gmail.com.

Note: The ratings for RAW is listed as 2 separate hours. I will round off, to the highest number, the averages of both hours for the final rating.

Thanks and enjoy!!!

"Flashback" Aug 1981 by Mark James

This Week’s Flashsback Highlights August 17 & 24, 1981

Twenty-seven years ago, There was a lot going on in Memphis. Jerry Lawler had been back in the ring for almost 8 months, (following a year’s absence from a broken leg). Jimmy Hart was cemented into the top manager’s spot.

Aug 17 , 1981
The main event featured Dutch Mantell going against Tojo Yamamoto in a “lights-out” stretcher match. Dutch was the babyface and if I remember it right, had been feuding with Tojo, Onita & Fuchi all since back in April. They had “kendo stick” matches, “bullwhip-on-a-pole” matches, you name it. In front of nearly 7,900 fans, the Dutchman got the victory over the evil Yamamoto.

Speaking of Masa Fuchi and Mr. Onita, they successfully defended their Southern Tag Team Titles against the fan favorite team of Steve Keirn and Bill Dundee. Keirn had been in the area a while and was the Mid-American Champ, he was still in the “upper-to-mid” level. He wasn’t in the main event status, (and wouldn’t gain that until the Fabs were formed), but was still doing well in the promotion. Teaming him with Bill Dundee would show the fans that he was the real deal and helped to give him credibility.

Another big match on the card had the Southern Heavyweight Champion, Dream Machine teaming with fellow heels Bugsy McGraw and the Nightmares to get a DQ win over Jerry Lawler, Steve Keirn and the Gibsons (Rick & Robert). Lawler was locked in a feud with the Dream Machine at the time. Jimmy Hart was the Dream’s manager and was sticking his nose into just about every single match his boy had.

The Heartbreakers (Joey Cagle & Rocky Sortar) were stopped by big Plowboy Frazier and Roy Rogers. Also on the card, Koko Ware stopped Tom Staton.

Aug 24 , 1981

Don’t ask me why, but it didn’t seem right if Jerry Lawler wasn’t wearing the Southern Title. The night’s main even had the King defeating the Dream Machine (w/Jimmy Hart) for the Southern strap. The “no-dq” match also had a stipulation that the loser would get “tarred-and-feathered”. While it wasn’t tar, (molasses), they did indeed use real feathers on the Dream.

Babyface Steve Keirn lost his Mid-American Heavyweight Title to Bugsy McGraw, who was starting to get a small heel push.

Dutch Mantell continued his feud with the Japanese by teaming with Bill Dundee against Mr Onita and Masa Fuchi (w/Tojo Yamamoto). Tojo ended up interfering in the match, getting his team DQ’d, (and saving their Southern Tag Titles.)

Rick and Robert Gibson were victorious over the Heartbreakers. The Nightmares defeated Koko Ware and Roy Rogers. In a 10 man match, Jimmy Hart, the Heartbreakers and the Nightmares defeat Plowboy Frazier, the Gibsons Ware and Rogers.

Any night the King wins the Southern belt is a good card. The attendance was just under 8,100.

"Shooting the Shiznit" Canceled and Reminder!!

----My job is keeping me from doing the shows, but I look for it to change in a few weeks. It looks like we should have a new FALL schedule in the first week of September and we got a lot of new guests lined up.

----For those attending the WWCW show this weekend in Kennett, MO, we will not be having the Grecian CCW meeting because a lot of peoople are working and such. I do hope to see a lot of the old CCWers out there. I have heard from Paul Justice and Rod Dent III and they both are planning to attend.

Classy Melton Massy. Winner Rottn Randy, Quixote.
Match 5. Texas Death Match. Fabulous Luke Graham Jr. VS Midnight Cowboy.
Winner. Midnight Cowboy.
Match 6. Triple Threat Match For The RWA Heavyweight Title.
Rik Burton VS Ron Rage VS Rodney "Red Dogg" Mack RWA Champion.
Winner. Rodney Mack.

Show opened with Frank Martin doing a interview with Rodney Mack the RWA Champion. Frank told the crowd that Rik Burton and the Rat Pack had beat up Mack 2 weeks ago and injured his shoulder. Since that time Mack had his second MMA fight. Mack told the crowd that yes the Rat Pack had hurt his shoulder and that yes he re injured the same shoulder in the MMA fight in which he lost. Martin went on to explain how Mack got put into the middle of the triple threat match. Mack told the crowd he did not care that he would defend his title. That's when Rik Burton's music hit and he came to the ring. Martin informed Burton that this was not his interview time and he should leave the ring. Has Burton turned to leave Mack continued to tell the crowd that he would defend the title and Burton turned and hit Mack with a chain. That's when Mike Anthony hit the ring and the two of them beat Mack down. POB hit the ring and Burton and Anthony powdered. The Natural Born Playa'z [Southside Brawler/Pimptacular] came out and told the crowd they were tired of Martin teaming them with the goof PP3. They went out and found the best talent to become the third member of the NBP Mike Anthony. With the addition of Mike Anthony the NBP become one of the strongest groups in wrestling.

The Battle Royal saw some new talent in the ring of the RWA. Mike Titan who is new and from the RWA school. This kid is 6'5" over 300 lbs and with time will be a monster in the ring. James Forsten made his debut and looked good. The Playa'z, Asylum, PP3, Mike Anthony, J.D. Kerry. It came down to J.D. Kerry and Mike Anthony. The Playa'z kept Anthony from going out and when Anthony threw Kerry over the ropes he assumed that Kerry hit the floor. Kerry did not and came up behind Anthony and threw him over the ropes and on to the floor. This is Kerry's first win in the RWA.

Mike Anthony had his first singles match against Lucky. Lucky showed that he can go but Anthony is not quick he is sudden and hit a running DDT for the win. Anthony impressed everyone in the arena.

The NBP's injected themselves into the tag match between Silas and Zane Richards and the Asylum. They beat the Asylum down with chairs as the announcers kept telling the Playa'z that what they were doing was not smart. The Playa'z told the announcers when was the last time they saw the Asylum left laying. The announcers then told the Playa'z when was the last time they beat someone down with chairs and they got up? The Playa'z left quickly. Psycho grabbed Martin at ring side placing the doll Kayte to his ear. Martin told the crowd that the doll told him that the Asylum wants a Hale County Street Fight with the Playa'z next week.

Rottn Randy and the Big Chief took advantage of Chris Steel and Massy not working as a team. Massy was holding Rottn as Steel came at him and Rottn ducked and Steel hit Massy. Rottn hit a big splash and got the 3 count. Steel and Massy had a falling out and the Playa'z had to come to the ring and make peace between them.

The Texas Death Match was exactly what the crowd wanted. Luke and Cowboy fought all over the building. Using a rope and cow bell that the Cowboy brought out to the ring. Both were bleeding and ended up in the ring where the Cowboy hit a pile driver for the win.

The Triple Threat Match for the title started with just Burton and Rage fighting it out. Mack had been beaten down real good before the show started and did not come out. Rage and Burton fought each other hitting heavy shots through out the match. Burton went up to the top rope and Rage caught him and hit a suplex off the second rope. Burton was up on his feet first and tried to put Rage in the figure four for a second time. Rage kicked him into the corner and has Burton spun around Mack hit the ring and speared him. Mack and Rage stared at each other and Rage told Mack to make the cover for the win. Looks like the POB and the Dog Pound maybe on the verge of combining. But remember there are a lot of members of the POB and The Dog Pound would just make them that much stronger.

There was 180 in the building for the show.

RassleResults: LAW Rector, AR 8.15.08

Idol Bane over Dell Tucker to retain LAW Championship
The Baron Malkavain over "The Bluesman" Ike
Rockin' Randy & Weasel over Steven Rampage & Mike Anthony
Derrick King over Silas
Christopher O'Neal over "The Golden Boy" Greg Anthony

Jeff O'Dell opened the show by introducing the new LAW Champion. Idol Bane came out and said that he was the most dominating thing in LAW and he's going to be the most dominating champion. Jeff O'Dell said he was giving Idol the night off but just then tgb's music played. tgb came out, he and Idol were standing face to face with Jeff trying to keep the peace but then tgb backed up and shook Idol hand. He told Idol that he wasn't angry that he was champion, he was proud... he felt like a father. tgb ended with "I Love You, man". Then Chris O'Neal's music hit, tgb hid behind Idol as Chris said that 4 months ago tgb tried to burn off half of his face but the wounds have healed and he's there for one reason to kick tgb's ass!! Then Chris said that when he was done with tgb, he was going to take back his title from tgb's life partner.. Idol Bane. tgb said that this is all Tucker's fault and Chris is going to regret ever showing his face in Rector. Tucker's music hit. Tucker said that tgb brought this on his self and since Idol Bane doesn't have a match how about he finally get his title shot! Idol agrees quickly. Tucker says since Idol is so ready to wrestle then how about we do this right now? Idol agrees again. The ref gets chris and tgb to the back and starts this impromtu LAW title match.

Tucker had things well in hand. He performed a vaulting crossbody to the outside on Idol Bane and then threw him back in the ring but just then tgb came and ran Tucker's head into the post and tossed him back into the ring. Idol gave Tucker The Ghost of Andy Kauffman to retain in his 1st title defense.

The Baron went for the Demon's Wings on Ike but he was way too big. Ike backdropped Malkavain but The Baron reversed it into a sunset flip and put his feet on the ropes for the 1...2...3!

Steven Rampage and Mike Anthony did a good job on keeping Weasel away from his corner but one mistake allowed him to get the hot tag to Rockin' Randy who came in like a house of fire. Rampage went for a suplex on Randy but Weasel stood behind Rampage and sit Randy down on his feet. Weasel then did the splits and when Rampage turned around he was nailed with a superkick from Randy to pick up the victory.

Derrick King came out what is now being called "Karoke with King", this week DK sang "Man in the Mirror" made famous by Michael Jackson but just then the over 7 foot tall Silas! DK had his hands full with this challenge. A body slam is elementry to pro wrestling unless someone over 7 foot gives it to you. DK only performed one offensive move in this contest but that one move was his devastating Superkick! 1..2...3 to squeek out a victory over Silas. Silas kicked out after the 3 count but was too little too late.

Chris had said this would be a fight and he wasn't lying. tgb and O'Neal brawled all of the building even up in the balcony. Chris hit The Overexposure kick.. 1..2... Jeff pulls the ref and knocks him out with one punch. Chris chases Jeff but tgb clotheslines him down. Greg then goes for a steel chair but Tucker takes in away from him before he can enter the ring. tgb then turns into a atomic drop and another Overexposure! Head Offical Sherina Fowler slides in and make the 1...2...3!! Chris and Tucker celebrate with the fans but just then Idol comes from the back and nails both of them with a chair. He tosses Chris and Tucker back into the ring. He gives O'Neal The Ghost of Andy Kauffman on the steel chair. tgb then gives Tucker The Honkey Tonk Women(pumphandle angle slam) onto the chair. tgb said that he said it earlier and he's going to say it again. "I Love Idol Bane!". If you thought we were unbeatable before... now with President and CEO Jeff O'Dell, The Champ Idol Bane and The Best of the Best "The Golden Boy" Greg Anthony we are Untouchable!
