Coach's Corner "The Road to RRO Wrestler of the Year: Let's Add Six More Names!" by Brian Tramel

----Last week’s Coach’s Corner got people to talking just like any other Corner that puts over guys.  I talked about which guys might have a chance to “walk the walk” to Wrestler of the Year.  Not only for this year, but years to come.  As I mentioned, there have been only seven guys that have walked that path in the four years of the site.  There have been only two guys take the award home.  What are the chances we will see a new name entered into the race this year??  We still have 5 months of 2010 left, so can someone make an impact that makes people want to call them Wrestler of the Year?  Austin Lane and Derrick King are the leading candidates this year, and I listed fourteen more names last week.  After reading over it and having others ask “What about this guy?,” I sit down and make a list of six more guys that I feel should have been mentioned.

-Albino Rhino – This guy is a monster!!  If it was 1985, Jerry Lawler would be main eventing against him.  Why isn’t Lawler using him now??  The reason he wasn't considered is that he is working just a limited schedule now.  If he ever got into the mode of working 2 to 3 shows a week, and different shows, this guy would have an impact.  He needs the desire to push himself.  The right person sees this guy, and he will be working big shows.

-Kevin White – I did mention him as one of the seven that have been nominated in the past four years, but would this guy have a chance to be nominated or win this year??  I think so.  The Memphis Wrestling TV show helped push White into the limelight in this area.  If they continue to push him on TV and the ratings go up, he will be on the radar more than ever now.  He may have a better chance of being nominated this year with Lane and King than anyone else.

-Maxx Corbin – I thought of him after his column.  This guy has done a lot this past year to get ready to be great the rest of the year.  He has not worked that much, but it looks like he is going to throw himself into working more and more dates now.  This guy is an asset behind the scenes, promoting and doing video work.  He is the whole package much like Dustin Starr who presented that to the WWE when getting a job.  Maxx can do that as a hand for a local promotion.  He has to be on top in front of fans to get their votes.  His peers love working him and consider him great for the dressing room.

-Chris O’Neal – Chris is one of the most popular guys in the area.  I have heard crowd reactions from him in different arenas – and it is usually the same – LOUD!!  If he stays in any place long enough, he becomes insanely popular in either a tag team or just as a single.  It will be hard for O’Neal to win the Wrestler of the Year award, because he is usually stuck in tags with Jon Michael or Christian Jacobs, with whom he won Tag Team of The Year 2007 and was ranked second in RRO Top 10 tag teams last year. This year he is tagging with Stan Lee, which will probably see him get nominationed in that category again.

-Stan Lee – He has been a mainstay as an award winner.  He has won MVP Performer two times and placed 6th or better in the RRO Top 10 the last three years.  What could he do to put himself over as the Wrestler? The top guy?? He is now doing a tag team and not sure if he will ever get that desire back to get better and get a full time job in wrestling.  When this guy is focused – he is the MAN in this area.  When he is not focused,  he is just one of those real good workers.

-Matt Boyce – This guy is almost the total package.  I say “almost” because he is not quite there yet.  He is highly improved in workrate, mic skills, and his look.  A great looking kid that could easily be a huge star not only in this area, but also one of those guys that you could see working for the WWE.  He works regularly and is seen by a lot of fans.  He is liked by his peers.  If they continue to push this guy on Memphis Wrestling, I look for him to get a mention in a few of the awards and might be a future Wrestler of the Year candidate.

----So I have now given you 22 total names to think about for the Wrestler of the Year award.  Which guys have the advantage now?  Which guys on this list will be there at the end of December?

Coach's Corner is a weekly Wednesday feature at RRO by Brian Tramel. Tramel was wrestling manager Coach BT in a former life with Coach's Corner being published on the internet during those days. He has since added it to RRO as his signature column.
