"Coach's Corner" by Brian Tramel

----Did you get a chance to listen to Trent Van Drisse’s “Jerkin The Curtin” with Rodney & Ron West? The West PPV idea is good, but can it work?? Something that Rodney West brought up is so true. Most TV shows you can watch online the day after or just hours after, if you miss them. But, guess what?? They are free!! Will the wrestling consumer buy it?? The cult following group CHIKARA did three PPVs last year and their “success” of them made them come to the decision that they will not run anymore this year. Their PPVs were only $2.99 and ran for 40 minutes long. I think a group like SAW, who has a free TV online, could within in the year offer a PPV for say $9.99 for one of their big shows. Ron West came off as a little out of touch with the business. “The idea is…” was said so many times I almost screamed. All that said West does seem to be as genuine as a circus/wrestling guy can be. He does want to bring back “wrestling” and that is a good thing. This group also has some good guys like Derrick King, Bill Dundee, Stan Lee, Kevin White and Michael St. John.

----In the world of television you can take a guy like John Schneider, who has been a Duke boy and Superman’s dad, and turn him into a porn king just like they have done on one my fave TV shows Nip/Tuck. The greatest perv of all time Vince McMachon has come up with another great idea. Besides having to watch a midget bite his ass on Monday night Vince’s new angle has one of the talented guys on his roster Paul Burchill and Katie Lea [pictured] starting what is rumored as an incest angle. Now, Burchill had one of the coolest gimmicks with the pirate gimmick, but guess what?? Vince had no idea how this would get over?? LOL It goes to show you how many wrestling guys are actually in a “tunnel” when they don’t even know how popular the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies were. I know you guys will remember me doing a major story on Vince releasing his DVD with the revelation that he wanted an angle that had Stephanie’s baby to turn out to be his; right?? Sources say Vince is saying that incest is one of the biggest sellers in porn right now, so it would be the kind of thing to do a storyline with. So we now judge our wrestling by porn standards?? Probably have for years. My question would be to Vince – if they told you that Scat movies were the most popular movies right now, would have crap fights on your show. Are have you already did that??

----How can a wrestling show screw up so much, but prove they have tons of potential whenever they want?? It seems like TNA is good at this process of putting on crap TV shows and then out of the blue comes a great match or angle or something. Last year one of the top TV bouts I watched was a bout with Samoa Joe vs Christian. TNA presented “Global Impact” and from start to finish this was one of best TV shows I will probably see all year long. Production was so slick and glossy that I could almost feel it. They got over every point and got over the fact how important Japanese wrestling is to the workers. Even if it wasn’t important, when you got done watching that show then you believed it was. Why doesn’t every wrestling show take the time to build like this?? This kind of formula might be something that would work for various indy promotions. Just spend the hour getting over EVERYONE and then show one big match at the end to showcase talent. I also thought the Kurt Angle vs Yugi Nagata was proof that there is still pro wrestling out there somewhere – you just have to look for it. I thought it was real good match – both guys are so realistic and great workers.

----The start of the rerun season has had been searching around to watch other promotions on the net. I can’t sit thru WWE TV and I have always liked my wrestling with a little Memphis feel to it also. If you get a chance go to www.thesuperstation.tv and watch SAW TV show that is taped in Millersville, TN and has seen some crowd increases in the last few weeks. The show’s production is very good for indy wrestling. It is put together by Nashville area wrestler Krull and he does a great job. Jack Johnson is about 100 times better than Corey Maclin and I like Michael St. John also. They had an interview with a rookie that was real scripted, but it was better than half of the guys in the local promotions. They also work with all the area promotions that are running shows in the area. They tape their show on Friday night, so they help all the guys promote their Saturday night shows. Why does Corey not do that?? Why does he not help the local guys that run shows using the same guys that work Memphis?? Doug Gilbert and Tommy Rich had two separate great pieces on the Episode 31 where they sit down with Reno Riggins. My faves on this show are Rick Santel [not a great worker, but like his gear and persona], Paul Adams [really good manager], Tribal Nation [Indian gimmick – both guys seem to try], Big Rigg Bully [tons of charisma], Damian Adams [small guy, but good look – anybody know the background on this guy – who trained him and such??] and “Boogie Woogie Boy” Gary Valiant [tons of charisma – looks like a member of “Family of Pain”].

----I remember saying that this kid would be the “stand out” when it came to “rookie of the year”. But, maybe this year might be his better year. He placed second in votes, but probably was not seen by as many people as the winner Ramsey Cahill or even Slim Pickens. This year could be the year to watch Eric Wayne. The ironic thing is that if this guy stays healthy then I might be writing this every year. There are wrestlers that you see coming up that you can just say, “Hey this kid has it.” And, Eric Wayne is one of those guys. This coming Sunday afternoon he will attempted to do something that not many people at this stage of career have even attempted to do and that is work a one hour bout. He will have to have a good steady partner in this dance and most I have talked with feel that Kid Nickels will provide that for him, since they have worked and trained together. I have been privy to other angles and plans for Eric as the year goes by and the guy is going to be thrown into the spotlight. He will be given his chance to shine – it will be up to him to prove he is capable. His father, Ken Wayne, had to do the same thing as he worked hard and changed the style a bit and actually became a better worker than his father – Buddy Wayne. Can Eric turn into a better worker than his dad?? I think Ken expects it and lots of us arm chair experts also do. Before the year is up, I would love to see Wayne in the ring with Stan Lee, Derrick King, Flash Flanagan, Pokerface or Alan Steele.
