Moondog Cujo Debuts for Memphis Wrestling - Chris Booker Responds!!!

----I have very little info from the tapings at this moment, but do know they taped two shows. And, I do know they used Cujo Moondog. If you have been a visitor of my site since the start, then you know how much I hate the Moondog bullshit. I have covered it in length with an article about Larry Booker [Spot Moondog] and also met with his son [Chris Booker] [pictured] and did a story with him on the subject. I find it very distasteful and it just shows the ignorance of Corey Maclin and Jerry Lawler in doing this type of thing. I know a lot of you are probably saying, “well it’s just wrestling”, but at some point you have to draw the line. The only way I would even consider this a smart thing to do, would have Chris Hollywood [Booker] come in and do an angle with Cujo being a heel. But, the little bit I do know about the taping, I believe they put him over big as a babyface. I e-mailed Chris for comment and this is what he sent me……

“I reviewed the "Remembering The Moondogs" tribute show that Cory and Lawler made up and they did say that there would not be any more Moondogs in Memphis Wrestling. (I have the tape.) Sorry yes I think it is pretty sorry for them to do that and yes I know that Moondog Spot was not the original Moondog. But he was one of the first and he did come from the WWWF. So that means he made the rest of these MOTHERFUCKERS. So out of respect for Moondog Spot they should just drop it.”

RassleTalk: Mark Bravura - Confessions of a Script Writer Part II

----I sent Mark Bravura [pictured @ Titian Towers] a series of questions about him getting an interview with WWE as a script writer, his trip to Titian Towers and everything about it. He returned with something that is more like a story than an interview, but I plan to present it here on Fridays for RassleTalk for the next few weeks. CLICK HERE to read the first part.

I ended up not getting to talk to another writer,
but I did get what’s called notes on my script. The guy’s biggest complaint is some things weren’t logical. Now coming from a WWE writer I’m sure this sounds funny, but it only gets funnier. Here are some
examples of things “Brian” didn’t think made sense. In
the angle for Raw, I had Edge using his Money in the
Bank shot to challenge Batista, but he wouldn’t tell
Batista when he would use it only that he was going
to wait until he had Batista worn down and in the
meantime he was going to send every Monster he could
find after him. There was obviously a lot more to it
than that, but that was the kernel of it. Basically, I
was going to use Edge as like the old time Manager
bringing in Monster after Monster to go after Batista
and hopefully injure him then Edge would be the
vulture picking the bones. “Brian” didn’t understand
why Edge would do that. “Why would he risk someone
else beating Bastista?” “Why wouldn’t he just
challenge Batista himself?” “It’s not logical that he
would send other people after him?” I’m sure anyone
with a brain could understand why a chickenshit heel
would hire people to try to injure the champion in
order to increase his chances of winning the title.
Why he would try to stack the deck in his favor. Why
he would pay them not to beat Batista, but to injure
him. Why he wouldn’t care if Batista lost because
it’s not Batista he wants, he wants the title. Why
Batista would face these challenges because he’s a
BABYFACE who’s confident in his abilities and isn’t
afraid. Apparently, these concepts were foreign to
“Brian.”

The Smackdown Angle, was a continuation of Angle
Hometown Challenge. It started with Angle and JBL
arguing with each other in the locker room because
both of them lost the night before. That led to JBL
saying that he could beat Angle in his own hometown
challenge. JBL challenged Angle to see who could win
their match faster. Also there was stuff with Danny
Basham showing up late and JBL getting pissed about
it. There were also promo videos for a new guy called
“The Damaja.” JBL won the first week of the challenge
with help from the Bashams and Orlando. He then
cheated to win the second week as well. Then Angle won
weeks three and four. Finally, in week five Danny
Basham took the hometown challenge and beats Angle
then turns on JBL and beats JBL then as he’s leaving
he gets to the top of the ramp and the Damaja video
plays and it’s revealed that Basham is the Damaja. Bam
instant star. “Brian” didn’t think this made any
sense. “Why would Danny Basham beat Angle and JBL?”
“Why would JBL want to prove he’s better than Angle?”
Why would Danny Basham turn on JBL?” “Why have promo
videos for a guy who’s already on the show?” I guess
the idea of making a new star by having him beat guys
who are already stars, building anticipation through
promos, having a guy get sick of being treated like
crap, and having two heels argue about who’s better
were beyond “Brian”’s comprehension.

Anyway, after getting Brian’s oh so brilliant notes
I wasn’t really looking forward to my interview with
Stephanie. It took three cancellations, but we
eventually got to it. To my surprise it went really
well. She hadn’t read my scripts yet so we talked
about other stuff. Some of it was the same job
interview type stuff, but then we started talking
about how I got into wrestling. We talked up the show
we were doing up in Dyersburg. We really hit it off.
She was really nice and seemed interested. Eventually
she asked me about what I said about wanting to work
with underneath guys rather than top guys. She said
that was really unusual and usually people want to
work with just the top guys. I told her pretty much
the same thing I told the other lady. That as a
director the real joy is seeing that great performance
come out of your actor. Seeing them realize that they
can do it. The top guys already know they can. They
know their characters. They know who they need to be.
The bottom guys might not. They need to be grown and
developed. See what works and what doesn’t. They
obviously have the talent. They just need the
personalities brought out of them so that they can be
the next generation of top guys. That was what I
wanted to do to help those guys grow.

So she asked me for examples, so I told her ideas I
had for the absolute bottom guys on the cards.
Snitsky, Conway, Tomko, Eugene, Helms, Hardy, Chavo as
Kerwin White. All the lowest level guys. I told her
how they had a chance for something huge when Hardy
came back from being fired and completely blew it. How
here was the chance to do something different and it
was completely fucked up. I must’ve gone off on the
for 30 minutes and she just listened and pretty much
agreed. Finally after over an hour and a half (we were
supposed to talk for 30 minutes) she had to go. She
said she was going to look over my scripts and get
back with me soon because she really wanted to bring
me up for an interview. This was like May 2005.

Over the next few weeks, I talked with Palma again
and Kathy again. They’d set stuff up and it would fall
through. They asked for another writing sample so I
sent them another sample. Almost everytime I was
supposed to talk to someone it would fall through.
Finally, after two months I talked with Stephanie
again. She apologized for the delay and said she was
trying to refamiliarize herself with my scripts. I
jokingly said they’re so out of date now they probably
don’t even matter. She laughed and said well do you
have anything new. I don’t remember exactly what it
was, but I basically told her that stuff from the
latest show was crap and what I would’ve done
differently, etc. Then I pitched her a couple of ideas
I had for underneath guys. Specifically, Snitsky,
Tomko, Helms, and Chavo. The Snitsky and Tomko thing
is long and involved, so that can come later, but it
included Motley and Tasha so its my favorite of
everything I pitched. Helms involved him dropping the
Hurricane thing and going heel as “Hollywood” Helms
basically the gimmick I pitched for him they gave
Nitro. Then I pitched giving Chavo as Kerwin White a
caddy, Derrick Black (who would’ve been DK), and a
beer cart girl. She really liked that one especially
the catch phrase “If it ain’t white it ain’t right.”
“And always bet on black.” We kicked around that one
for probably 20 minutes. A month later Chavo had Nick
Nemeth as a caddy.

Anyway, they kept trying to schedule me to fly up
to Stanford, but it just kept falling through for one
reason or another. I talked to Palma and Kathy almost
weekly and Stephanie a few more times. Finally, at the
end of October 2005, I was offered a job back home in
DC. I called the WWE peeps and told them that I was
taking a job in DC, but I was still interested. I just
wanted to keep them updated. That next week I flew to
LA for the American Film Market where we had two films
being represented. When I landed in LA I had a
voicemail from the WWE saying that they just had to
get me up to Stanford ASAP and to call them as soon as
possible about scheduling my trip.

My trip to Stanford and Titan Towers: coming
soon.

----Almost all the matches ended with the heels winning as they are doing a heel “new bosses” gimmick with Blade, AX and Jessie James. Chris Steven attempted to give the belt he won back last week to JJ Fuller, but Fuller was not there. The new bosses ended up beating up Stevens and giving the belt to AX…Big Cyrus “snapped” in the match with AX and left everyone lying. Cyrus was bleeding from the head and mouth…Chris Fontaine/Tysin Starr get a tag team title shot this weekend.

RassleBits: Brian Thompson, TLCW, NBW and Ken Wayne School Students

----Brian Thompson is booking the WFAC show that we advertised yesterday. Thompson has been around this area for a while now and I first met him at an ECW show in Popular Bluff in 2001. The kid is smart and has been around Bobby Eaton for a few years now, so that will not hurt anything. I wish him luck with WFAC and I hope the promotion does very good. It will give all the guys somewhere else to work on Friday nights.

----A few notes from the weekend shows…At the end of the Battle Royal in TLCW, the announcers actually said Tatt2 [Turbo] won, even though DK was standing in the ring alone. Tatt2 was suppose to win at the start of the show, but it changed when DK came up with the Dustin Starr idea…J. Weezy came during an intermission while Big Red was trying to get heat after a match in NBW. Red grabbed him up and was a little stiff with him. When will the young guys learn??

----I made note of Kid Nickles and Eric Wayne being trainees of Ken Wayne. I am being told that Eric and Nickles also work on Friday nights in Humboldt, TN for NWA Mid-South. They have got to work guys like Motley Cruz and Don Bass, so these guys can only improve. I look for them being two strong candidates for “rookie of the year” in 2007. A new guy, who refereed the other night in Batesville, is expected to start in a month to 6 weeks out of the Ken Wayne school and he is also getting good reviews.

RassleChronicle and 10 Years Ago in Memphis Wrestling

----I would like to apologize for forgetting to include RassleChronicle every week. It seems that when the week is busy, I just forget it. This week has been slow on the news, so I thought about it. The Memphis stuff is funny because Maclin asked for a raise?? He is not worth 10 cents now -- he was not worth a nickel 10 years ago!!

----RassleChronicle is a look at wrestling 10 years featuring the RAW/Nitro Reports. I also including Herb Kuntz tidbits from that week.

10 Years Ago in Memphis Wrestling

USWA: Things went from bad to worse for the promotion this past week. Following the departure of long time announcer Dave Brown last week, Brown’s co-commentator, Cory Maclin, and Randy Hales both left the promotion as well this week, citing differences with new general manager, Larry Burton. Maclin left after he asked for a raise and was turned down. Maclin felt he was entitled to the raise due to him being upgraded from secondary announcer to lead announcer, in the wake of Brown’s leaving. Hales left the promotion due to burn out and the feeling he wasn’t getting any respect from Burton…... Taking the place of Maclin and Brown on the tv show was local radio host, John Rainey and his friend, Brad Shapiro. They debuted as the new announcers on the February 1st morning show, and were said to be so bad, it appeared they were doing a spoof of Brown and Maclin (they weren’t). Highlights from the weekend tv show saw Billy Travis return to the promotion. In a shoot promo, Travis revealed that he’d spent the previous 22 months in drug rehab. Turning it into an angle, he then blamed Wolfie D for getting him hooked on drugs. PG-13 came out and mocked Travis….. In another angle, Jamie Dundee suckered his father Bill Dundee into a trap, by pretending he wanted to reconcile with him, only for Wolfie D to jump the Superstar……. Super Crazy (yes, the same Super Crazy currently on WWE tv, billed as Super Histeria here) defeated Ice via D.Q. when Wolfie D interfered…… Brian Christopher defeated Shaquille Ali (Tracy Smothers) via D.Q. when Elijah (Spellbinder) ran in….. The Truth Commission also debuted on tv in a taped vignette. Several months later they would show up in the WWF for a brief run…….

The Ratings Are In!! It is bad!! White/Dundee Angle Watched by over 120,000 Fans!!

----The show this week plummeted back down to 2.2 after reaching a big 4.1 last week. The show average for 2007 so far is 2.8. The average last year overall was a 4.2 and the first quarter last year was a 5.1. [as featured in Yearbook 2006] This can not be good news for the Corey and company. You don’t have to go back but to the first show of the year to get a lower rating - it scored 2.1, but you have go back to 8.19.06 before you can find a show with a lower rating than that.

----The first quarter scored only a 1.4 [22,472 viewers], which I believe is the lowest quarter I have seen since starting the site. It featured the Derrick King interview and the “Opening the Vault” piece right after the concession stand brawl clip. The second quarter finish the Moondog segment, The Grizz angle and ended during the Flex/Grind/Flash interview. It scored 1.9 [32, 127 viewers], which was 9,655 viewer jump. The third quarter jumped 10, 320 viewers scoring a 2.6 [42,447 viewers] for the 6 man tag, American Idol contestant and almost at the end of Jethro vs Sam Shaw. The 4th quarter scored 2.8 [46,442 viewers] jumping 3,995 viewers for the finish of Jethro vs Shaw and White/Hughes/Brown/Dundee angle. The show ended with 23,970 more viewers than it started with.

----The Bill Dundee/Kevin White angle has actually started a streak of it’s own with the last two weeks of being featured in the highest rated quarter. White as a babyface was linked with matches with Lawler and was featured in some of the biggest dropped segments. This seems to be proving that he has heel appeal. Is it also because the feud is with Dundee and he is helping the ratings?? I blasted him last week for being the reason for the drop, but it looks like fans are wanting to see the Dundee/White angle or at least White as a heel. That angle has been seen by over 120,000 fans in the last two weeks.

Eaton and other stars to honor memory of Newport resident Friday night!!!

NEWPORT, Ark. - Professional wrestling stars will honor the memory of one of their own Friday night, when WFAC Wrestling hosts the first ever "Sharon Burnside Memorial Cup Tournament," at the Newport National Guard Armory, 2000 Fairground Rd., in Newport.Burnside, the co-owner of WFAC, passed away last August. Her son Chris Bryant, known to local wrestling fans as "The Lineman," has carried on the tradition of WFAC Wrestling, but briefly put the organization on hiatus in November 2006. After more than a three month wait, the wrestling company will return this Friday at 8 p.m. with a special guest - wrestling legend "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton.

"Bobby was my mother's favorite wrestler," said Bryant. "I know she would have loved to see Bobby wrestle one more time in person. She will definitely be there with us in spirit Friday night." Eaton will be in attendance to meet fans and present a trophy to the winner of a six man tournament. The eventual victor will be declared the first ever holder of the Sharon Burnside Memorial Cup.

Eaton has competed in professional wrestling for more than 30 years. He is regarded by many as the top tag team wrestler of all time, having held numerous regional tag team championships and the NWA/WCW World Tag Team Championships on three different occasions with three different partners. His most noted tag team partners were "Loverboy" Dennis Condrey and "Sweet" Stan Lane in two variations of the Midnight Express.

The actual tournament itself will feature six of the top performers in the history of WFAC Wrestling. Participants are Scott Fury, X-Caliber, Cody Daniels, Kid Krazzy, Allan Storm and Idol Bane. Fury and Storm have received automatic byes into the semi-final round based on their standing in WFAC. The other four athletes will battle to advance into the semi-finals and eventually the finals.

In addition to winning the tournament, the final man standing will be declared the No. 1 contender to the vacant WFAC Championship and will compete for that title at a future date. "We've always wanted to bring our fans the best and most exciting wrestling around," said Bryant. "We are looking forward to rebuilding a bigger and better than ever WFAC." Tickets for Friday's show are $5 and will be available
at the door.

RassleResults: MCW Osceola, AR 2.03.07

----“The Hambones” [Leroy & Pedro] defeated Big Jim & Gary The Medic; MCW Cruiserweight Champion Thunder pinned Kid Krazy in a non-title match; MCW Heavyweight Champion Hambone #1 [Leroy]/Chris Hollywood beat Mr Excitement/Gary The Medic; Austin Lane pinned White Lightening to capture the MCW Middleweight Championship; Big Daddy LaFonce/Frankie Tucker beat Loose Cannon/Morgan Lane and in the Main Event: “East Coast Bad Boys” [Sypro/Serpant] beat Scott Graham & Ray Ray.

----100 in the crowd with a 80 crowd - $480 gate…They have way too many champions here. A middleweight and cruiserweight?? WTF?? I was told the middleweight is for the good workers, the cruiserweight is for the real small guys and the Heavyweight belt is for the old guys. I understand now. LOL…Tag team main event was best match on the show with lots of heat.

RassleBits: Flame and Sheldon Goldberg

----I got an e-mail that Flame of Fire/Flame had a death in his immediate family and he had to travel to Alabama. He wanted to be with his family for the funeral. To all the promoters that had Fire/Flame booked for this weekend the letter stated, “We are truly sorry for not making the shows, but in this we could hope you understand the situation.” Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Donnie Wayne Miller.

----Sheldon Goldberg was a subscriber to my old fanzine “Rasslin Riot” over 15 years ago. He has been involved in wrestling for a long time and even been featured as a historian for many biography projects. He wrote an excellent article titled "Things they don't teach you in wrestling school: Part 1" in his blog and wanted to share it with you. CLICK HERE!!!

RassleResults: MEW Batesville, AR 2.03.07 - ALL TITLES CHANGE HANDS!!

----Kid Nickels beat Velvet Thunder; “The Playboy Club” [Tommy Wayne/Ray Ray] beat “Danger Zone” [David Cox/Johnny Harper]; Eric Wayne beat Kid Krazzy; “Hot Rod” John Ellison won the MEW cruiserweight title beating Rozzi; Gravedigger beat Casino Kid to win MEW Title and Main Event: “Righteous Punishment” [Jack “Lockdown” Johnson/Byg Daddy Moose] beat Matt Boyce/Scotty Graham with Luke Graham Jr. for the MEW Tag Team Titles.

----263 people in the building…Nickels and Wayne are both students of Ken Wayne. Good to seem them work other people already…Surprised to see all titles change hands on one show.

RassleResults: TIWF Jackson, TN 2.03.07

---Steven Rampage beat Razor; Overkill beat Void [pictured] to retain the TV title; Wildside beat PK Ripper by DQ in a Title vs Title Match; Steve Rampage beat Overkill to win the TV Title and in the Main Event: “Genocide” [Maxx Corbin/Albino Rhino] beat “The Big Boys” and Lawman Williams/Dazzlin’ Dixie in a Triple Threat to retain the tag belts.

----When is Void going to win a match here?? LOL Speaking of Void, have you read the RassleTalk with him?? CLICK HERE and check it out!!!…I like the way they stretching out the finish of the Title vs Title angle – I really hope they finish it off with someone having both belts to eliminate one title from the group. They don’t need a Cruiserweight Title…Ravishing Randy came again demanding steroid testing. He also said at the front of the show that the winner of the main event would win $10,000, but later in an interview said, $8,000. Funny. He also made mentioned to his “date” last week, so I am guessing this is part of the storyline…The stipulations of the main - The Big Boys had to be pinned by a five count [since they are with the heel commish] while everyone else could be pinned in three, Rampage was the "guest" referee, it was a no DQ match however if Genocide and “Dixie Justice” [Lawman /Dixie]didn't fight they would be suspended, no time limit, no titles on the line, $10k on the line.. or was it $8k? The end of the match Rampage went and got his "sample" to throw it in Genocide's face. Wildside/Randy were chased to the back by Lawman/Dixie. Finish had Genocide pin Bob of the Big Boys after a DDT on the chair and the sample was thrown in Rampage's face and blinded him, so he counted out the Big Boys…The urine sample was funny in the face for two weeks, but it can’t been done every week!!! Still love that angle though.

RassleResults: NBW Dyersburg, TN 2.03.07 KILO TURNS!!!

----Gauntlet match for the NBW High Risk title - "Playboy" Thomas Love beat Slim "the Bulldog Pickens -The Sicilian Kid beat Love - Kid beat J. Weezy Waldo - Gryffon X beat Kid -Gaylon Ray beat Gryffon X - Gaylon Ray beat Rob Harlem [Sir Mo] after a special challenge - Gaylon Ray is the NEW High Risk Champ; "Bounty Hunters Match: Upset Kid" Jeremy Moore beat Big Red; “East Coast Bad Boyz” [Sypro/Serpant] beat “Ca$hFlow [Thomas Love & GryffonX] to become #1 contenders for the tag-team titles; "Real Deal" Tim Edwards beat Tank in a submission match and in the Main Event: "Special Challenge match" "All That" Allen Steele & NBW Heavyweight Champion "Southern Outlaw" Kilo [pictured] went to a no contest.pull apart at the end with the whole locker room emptying and doing a pull apart.

---- About 100 in the building with a gate close to $400...The Kilo/Steele match was set up at the beginning of the show. Steele was out plugging the M.A.I.N. Foundation [charity organization started by Mo to help kids stay off drugs, away from violence, and all kind of abuse stuff], giving away free t-shirts to the kids when Kilo comes out and says that he's the champ, and he feels like being generous too, he wants to give away a shirt, he wants to be caring. So he gives a shirt away and they shake hands and go to leave. Steele tells Kilo to go first, Kilo opens the ropes for Steele to leave and then turns on Steele…Stip of “Bounty Match" was if Moore wins, BMG becomes Moore’s "Butler" for 30 days, but if Red wins, Moore becomes BMG's "Butler" for 30 days. Moore has Red as his Butler now…The Tank/Ewards match only went about 3 to 4 minutes because the ring broke and Tank got a really bad stinger on his spine which caused his left leg to go numb. He was doing the Umaga spot where he has them sat down in the corner and runs and puts his butt in their face - Edwards moved and he hit and the ring snapped, dropped the turnbuckles down and gave him one hell of a stinger. He got a standing ovation when he got up… Fire/Flame no showed as they were scheduled vs the ECBB.

RassleResults: Arkansas Championship Wrestling Paragould, AR 2.03.07

----Hambones Express/Shakedown with “Sexy” Sam Dollar beat Masked Menace/Zane Richards; Next Division Title Match: Big Indian beat Hamhock with Dollar; ACW Title Match – Handicap Match – San Francisco Treat/Adrian Stratton over Loose Cannon by COR; Arnez with Kayte & Bate Masterson beat Bryan Pillow and in the Main Event: Deadly Dale/Idol Bane with Masterson beat Cody Daniels/Zane Richards and “Family of Pain” [Sarge O’Reilly/Mickey Ray] with Sam Dollar in a triple threat.

----The group continues to draw with 115+ in the building and gate around $800. Here is the kicker – because of the bad weather they were not able to put up posters and their big sign in front of the building didn’t go up until the day of the show. They have a following that is going to come out and watch the show every other week. I wonder if they did a major advertising blitz how much this group could draw??...Arnez brought out his own version of Kayte [the baby doll that Psycho carries to the ring] …Buster Johnson did not work has he was suffering for a virus…Treat/Stratton are over big as babyfaces. Crowd was hot for them vs Cannon, but Cannon just walked out…Cody Daniels turned heel in the main even to join the Bate Masterson group…Dirty Little Dave was backstage…Blakster no showed…Midnight Cowboy was in the crowd.
