----I hate going into a big show and not really knowing the whole card. NBW has dropped the ball on sending results. I think I know four of the matches, but don't take my word on it. LOL Show up tonight for the show in Newbern - it starts at 7:30 PM!!

Corey Maclin welcomed everyone to another edition of Memphis Wrestling and announced that the next big date for Memphis Wrestling will be Saturday night, August 1st at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. It's free, following the Memphis Redbirds game. They will have the television cameras on hand, shooting the show live and showing it in the weeks that follow. Memphis Wrestling and the Memphis Redbirds team up for the Payroll Management Group Grand Slam on Saturday night, August 1st! Corey explained how it works: You buy your tickets to the Redbirds baseball game. That admission gets you into wrestling, immediately following the game, absolutely free! So you are going to get two-for-one. Actually, you are going to get three-for-one because they have another special gift that Corey will tell us about, later in the show.
Corey said that in the next week or two to come, they will be broadcasting from beautiful AutoZone Park and telling us the entire lineup. Corey promised us that there will be some HUGE, HUGE superstars that are coming in for Saturday, August 1st at AutoZone Park.

Opening the Vaults of Memphis Classic Wrestling with footage of "The Fabulous Ones" (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane) going against The Moondogs (Rex & Spot) with "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart in their corner. The finish of this one came when Jimmy Hart attempted to hit Steve Keirn in the face with some powder, but Keirn ducked and Hart hit The Moondog with the powder. Then, Keirn leveled the blinded Moondog with a piledriver and made the cover, but the other Moondog tried to strike him with his bone, but Keirn moved, again, resulting in the Moondog hitting his partner. While Keirn went after The Moondog, Lane jumped in and pinned the hurt Moondog to get the win for The Fabs.
Opening the Vault with a Classic Barbwire Match between Jerry "The King" Lawler and "Dirty" Dutch Mantel. This was one epic, bloody war. "The King" ended up getting his hand raised in victory. The finish came when Lawler and Mantel collided together. Lawler fell into the ropes, with Mantel falling down on the mat. Lawler catapulted off the ropes, falling on top of the fatigued Mantel to get the three count. Lawler regained the Southern Heavyweight title.
Opening the Vault-Six-Man Tag featuring the team of Tojo Yamamoto, Mr. Onita, and Masa Fuchi taking on Roy Rogers and The Gibsons, Rick and Robert. These two teams fought until the time expired. This ended with both teams brawling in the ring with Yamamoto, Onita, and Fuchi retreating to the outside where Onita and Fuchi were quick to snatch up their Southern Tag belts.
Corey said that Memphis Sport magazine had Memphis Wrestling teaming up with the Memphis Redbirds on the baseball field ranked as one of the top sporting events in the city. Corey added that there is a lot of big names and he can't believe the way the card is stacking up. There will be some major stars that we will be hearing from in the weeks to come.
More Opening the Vaults of Memphis Classic Wrestling with some footage from the Randy Savage/Austin Idol feud. This clip was from their match at the Mid-South Coliseum. Angelo Poffo threw a chain to Savage. Savage blasted Idol with the chain and got the pin. Following the match, Idol tied Savage up in the ropes (Andre style) and put Angelo Poffo in the Las Vegas leglock. This was followed by video of when Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart viciously attacked Austin Idol in the studio.
Highlights of four classic battles between Lawler and Dundee. There was also some very brief footage that aired of an Eight-Man Tag, which featured, The Dream Machine, The Heartbreakers and The Nightmare Ken Wayne taking on Rick and Robert Gibson, Steve Keirn, and "Superstar" Bill Dundee. These videos have been shown a few times over the past several weeks.

Dustin Starr vs Austin Lane and Tonight in Dyersburg!!!
----Above is a look at Starr in the ring in Wynne, AR last night for PWA. I was told the crowd was right at a 100, but everyone was happy with the matches. I talked with a few of the guys on the show and Austin Lane today. Lane has a new site coming soon and he is going to take a look at the old Rampage promotion from Jonesboro. Everyone seem to be happy with the match and said that Starr/Lane worked well together. Take a look at how in shape that Starr is in!! And you wonder why he is getting looks from the WWE?? Starr posted a few comments, but should have more about it over the weekend. CLICK HERE to read the Starr Treatment!!
----Tonight in just a few hours is DCW with DK at the helm again. King will be facing Flash Flanagan tonight and that should worth the price of admission. No idea on who else will be on the show.

Another Show for The Weekend!!
----Tomorrow night, wrestling will be eld at the Union City High School. Proceeds to benefit the Boys & Girls Club, The Fellowship to Christian Athletes and the UCHS Booster Club. Flier has Jerry Lawler, Koko Ware, "Too Kool 2" [Tim Grind/Flex], Brian Christopher [will not be there], Kevin White, Ladies match, Bill Dundee [probably will not be there] and others. Flier was in PDF format, so I was unable to upload it. I am looking for a report of the show if anyone attends it??

----This is a new monthly column by one of the local workers of the area. I have been told what makes this site "legit" is that we keep a list columnists that are actually performers in the business from Sal to Bruno - from Thompson to TGB. And I guess with Gene Jackson and me - we can coin ourselves as "former" something. LOL I actually met Maxx thru the site [adult friend finder?? LOL] and even though he has sometimes been accused of being one of my stooges, he still kayfabes everything to me. The photo features Albino Rhino, Flash Flanagan, me and Maxx in the very front.
Hello all and welcome to my new monthly column. I feel I need to write this to warn you about what you may be reading. Like the show Seinfeld this will be a column about nothing. I can guarantee you that. Some months might be poll questions, some might be comedy skits for wrestlers I know, and some might just be funny road stories. I may even talk about topics such as movies and pop culture as well. We might even have some videos for you here like the CinaMaxx ones from earlier in the year. On top of everything else I can promise you 2 things. 1: this will be done with good humor and for fun. I may involve some colorful language from time but I will try to keep all negativity down on here and 2: Grammar will be horrible and Words will be misspelled from time to time.
I'm far better at talking than I am at writing or typing. Many of you would never know this though. Why? Because I'm 6'4" and about 3 bills. Us big guys are supposed to be big, slow, and stupid/monstrous so when ever I get mic time its goes something like this, "ARRRR, Me Maxx. Me GONNA KILL OPPONENT....ARRRRR." Can I just say that the fact that I say that just kills me sometimes. I would love to just once , just one time go out to the ring and say, "Hello ladies and gentlemen and good evening. As some of you hopefully know my name is Maxx Corbin. My opponent this evening is far inferrior to me and will no doubt be of little competition to me. For the next 10 minutes, if you will allow me, I would like to show you that sometimes those with brawn have brains as well. Thank you and enjoy the match!" Would that blown a mind or two, huh. Then I would lose and go all redneck "HE HADA CHAIN Rayuff....HE HAD A CHAIN!!!" Anyways, I wanna have some fun with this and maybe for a change people can see a side of me that few do. Normally, this is the section of the page where credentials are written about the writer. But seeing as how he has few we'll list random stuff that sounds important. Born Richard Mullikin, Maxx Corbin is a 7 year pro in wrestling. While growing up in Bemis,TN as a kid, he had no cable and lived week to week on the wrestling tapes he got from family and friends. He likes to think he has a great since of humor and makes light of tense situations. This is why he no longer works at the local hospital. He enjoys playing video games, stand up comedy, and music that very few have a taste for. He won an award in his middle school technology class for building a small bridge out of hobby wood. The bridge held 55lbs. He graduated from his high school with a 3.4 gpa. He was super bad ass at WCW vs NWO World Tour on N64(usually taking out opponents during Jerry Springer commercial breaks). HMMM, what else? Did I mention the bridge? ....Yeah?....well that's it then!

RassleResults: RWA Jonesboro, AR 7.18.09 - New RWA Tag Team Champions!!
----We posted the results earlier this week, but here is the detailed results from our regular reporters!!

5. The Natural Born Playa'z VS The RWA Tag Champions. Midnight Gold.
The show opened with Brandon Wallace in the ring, the RWA appointed Brandon Wallace as the acting commissioner in the absence of Big Money Frank Martin and Rodney Mack. After he ran down the card for the show, they were interrupted by the RWA Tag Team Champions. They were refusing to put up the titles since Greg Anthony was not with them. The Playa'z came out and told Wallace that they had a signed contract they wanted the match to night. Wallace explained that the contract was binding and Midnight Gold would have to defend the titles tonite. Like all great stables in Professional Wrestling Rage came out and told Boddy Eaton he would tag with him for the tag team titles. So it would be a Tag Team Title match with Bobby Eaton and Rage defending the titles.
1st match had Donnie Rush taking on John Allen. These two are just two of the young stars that the Dogg Pound Do Jo has in its stable. Rush started out the match in control and after several minutes of chain wrestling with moves like headlocks and reversals. A reversal of a power bomb into a hip toss, Rush came out on top and still had control. This match went back and forth and was fast paced with several near falls. Rush hits a monkey flip and went for a second and Allen pushed him off and Allen gained control. Allen started to work the left arm and worked it for several minutes. Allen then hit several duplexes and each one put more stress on the arm. Allen missed a second rope leg drop and Rush gained control once again but it was short lived. Allen took control quickly going back to the arm. Allen throws Rush out of the ring and hits a knee drop off the apron then rolls Rush back into the ring and after Rush kicked out of the pin attempt Allen went up to the top rope and hit a moons and got the pin fall. Winner John Allen.
2. Kid Krazy VS Lucky. Kid Krazy and Lucky are two of the fan favorites in the RWA however Krazy may not want to be a fan favorite. As the match began Kid dropped to his knees mocking Lucky. But Lucky did get the best with the first lock up. On the next lock up Lucky grabs a side headlock and Krazy pushes him into the corner and attempts a splash with no luck. Lucky goes back to the headlock. Krazy reverses it and hits a Russian leg sweep and picks up Lucky whipping him into the corner goes for a shoulder block and Lucky moves and Krazy goes thru the ropes to the ring post. Krazy attacks Lucky has Lucky allows Krazy to get into the ring with no attempt to catch him coming thru the ropes. Krazy gains control and puts Lucky in a sleeper. Krazy still favoring the shoulder can't hold the sleeper Lucky attempts a reversal and Krazy hits a DDT out of it. Krazy kept working the neck and back on Lucky. Lucky attempted to grab an arm bar but Krazy escaped and Lucky sent Krazy into the corner went for the splash and misses Krazy rolls up Lucky places his feet on the ropes and gets the pin. Winner Kid Krazy.
3rd match. Pokerface vs Logan Fury. Fury took off right off the bat running from Pokerface this happens a couple times until Fury catches Pokerface coming in and gains control. Pokerface fights back and it looks like this is going to be a brawl between these two who have been fighting for the number one contender for the RWA TV belt. Pokerface finally grabs a headlock and takes Fury down to the mat. Logan rolls up Pokerface for several 2 counts and Logan gets loose and runs to the outside again. It broke down again and the fighting started again, Logan gains control working over the left leg to take away Pokers big kick. Pokerface works himself free and goes for a dropkick but misses. Fury stays on Pokerface's leg Fury hits several big punches and then a springboard elbow drop and gets a 2 count. Fury keeps beating on Pokerface and Pokerface gets a roll up for a 2 count and the two exchange blows and Pokerface gets control hitting a back body drop. That's when Angelina comes out and slaps Pokerface. Pokerface grabs her and at that point Fury hits his finisher and gets the pin fall. Winner Logan Fury.
At this point Angelina steps up and calls out Jazz! Boy did Jazz answer the call. Jazz hit the ring and Angelina left the ring saying not to night. Jazz told this girl that she is the badest Bitch in Jonesboro and the World! (No doubt about that). Jazz had no problem accepting the challenge. The crowd was going crazy at this point!
4th match. Acid VS The RWA TV Champion J.D. Kerry. Both of these guy's displayed their attributes in this match, Kerry had the speed and Acid has the power. Kerry tried to hit a couple of clotheslines and got the big boot for his trouble and J.D. rolls to the outside. Acid follows him outside and throws Kerry into the wood barricade. Back into the ring Acid works over Kerry, Kerry fights back as much as possible but Acid is just too strong. Acid goes for a power bomb and Kerry hits a sunset flip out of it for a 2 count. Acid goes back on the attack and Kerry powders to get away, Acid goes after Kerry and throws him back into the ring. Acid starts to come back into the ring and Kerry hits a dropkick sending the big man back out of the ring. Kerry hits a springboard leg drop as Acid crawls back into the ring but only gets a 2 count. Acid powers his way back into control, Acid misses a splash attempt and at that point Logan runs out to the ring. Pokerface comes out right behind him. Logan gets caught by Pokerface and Logan throws Pokerface into the ropes knocking Kerry off the top turnbuckle and Acid covers him giving Acid the win. Winner Acid. This was not a title bout but in the aftermath Pokerface and J.D argue over what happened.
Main Event. The Champions Midnight Gold Beautiful Bobby Eaton with a sub in The Golden Boy's place Rage. with Brian Thompson VS The Natural Born Playa'z in a return Tag Team Championship Match.
Rage and Southside start the match with Southside hitting a hurrcranna on Rage and tags Pimp. Pimp has control as he is working Rage but Rage fights back and tags in Eaton, Pimp still has control and Eaton sucker punches Pimp. Eaton then Tags Rage back in. Pimp rakes the eyes of Rage who body slams Eaton as he tries to help Rage. Pimp jumps on Rage and makes the tag to Southside. Rage gets Southside in their corner and works over Southside’s leg with good tag team work they tag in and out working on the leg. Rage stay's in on each tag to double team Southside. This brings in Pimp but the ref stops him. Rage hits the Sky High on Southside for a 2 count and tags Eaton. Eaton goes back to work on Southside's leg.. Southside tries for a tag and Rage cuts him off. Eaton tags in Rage who keeps the pressure on Southside. Rage sends Southside into the ropes and Southside hits a clothesline and tags Pimp. Southside distracts the ref and then Rage comes over to put in his 2 cents Southside hits a super kick on Rage and gets the 3 count. Winner and New Tag Team Champion The Natural Born Playa'z
Brain Thompson yells and screams at Rage, Telling him that it was his fault and apologizes to Big Money then leaves to call Big Money! Frank "Big Money" Martin was not at the show this week.
The show was great and the crowd was hot all night, 150+ in the building.

Todd Martin Talks Lawler
----So how many of you saw RAW last night?? How did Jerry Lawler look?? I always want him to win, but hated reading he beat Brian Kendrick. LOL This was from last night's post on www.wrestlingobserver.com by Todd Martin.

Jerry Lawler beat The Brian Kendrick. Kendrick got into an argument with Lawler at the announce table for no discernable reason and then they just cut right to a match. Again, on the subject of build, wouldn’t it make more sense to, say, build to this ever so slightly? You know, like Kendrick badmouths Lawler for 30 seconds on a few shows, Lawler finally cuts a 30 second promo back, and then they do the match and it actually means something?
Anyway, Lawler hit a punch early. Kendrick worked him over briefly. Lawler made a comeback with punches and a dropkick. Kendrick went for the sliced bread #2 but Lawler avoided that and hit a fist drop off the second rope for the pin. This was a lot of fun. The WWE women really should watch this match. For whatever reason, they have it in their heads that they need to prove how athletic they are so they do 50 big spots in each three minute match, blow half of them, and it feels like a poorly choreographed and executed dance routine rather than a match. Lawler, on the other hand, sticks to the absolute basics but he’s so good at doing those basics that everything looks perfect and the match works great.

----Dave Meltzer in the 7.20.09 issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter had this to say about Lawler running for mayor.
Lawler officially announced he would be running for mayor of Memphis on 7/8. Lawler said he was not going to ask for any campaign contributions. There is no date scheduled for the special election after current mayor Willie Herenton steps down. Herenton won the 1999 mayoral election that Lawler ran in and got 12% of the vote. Herenton has said he is going to retire from the post effective the end of this month. Nine different candidates have already openly stated they are either running or have strongly indicated they would be doing so. Two other area politicians say they are considering it. There was the fear in an 11-person race that the winner would get a heavily diluted mandate. That may help Lawler, although he is not considered by the local media to have a significant chance. Shelby County Mayor A.C. Wharton is considered the favorite. Carol Chumney, a former city councilwoman, is considered the co-favorite because she’s had two years of building a base of voters in local elections. Lawler has intimated he’s serious about running this time, unlike the first time where it was really a publicity stunt. Being mayor would be a full-time job so if he wins, and he would be a longshot because he’s coming from outside the political system, even though from a name recognition standpoint, everyone in the city knows who he is which is an advantage. If elected he would quit WWE, which shocks me because Lawler has a great gig, making a couple of hundred thousand per year working one or two dates per week and still can do indies or autograph shows on his own without company interference (well, usually, obviously they didn’t let him do that Hogan vs. Lawler match and have pulled him in the past from a few high profile indie dates). Lawler almost always flies to his destination on Monday, doesn’t attend the production meeting, has Michael Cole give him a brief update on the key points of the show, goes through the show and is usually out of the building by 11:15 p.m. He’s largely emotionally detached from the product itself, and except when they make him look goofy by having to stand there right in front of a babyface being killed, he really doesn’t care what they do. We did hear reports he wasn’t thrilled the last time he made his TV comeback in the Los Angeles ten-man tag because all the stars wanted to get their stuff in and nobody cared about making him look good. Lawler did an interview talking about leaving WWE if he wins the election noting that flying out every week gets old. Lawler turns 60 at the end of November.

Vince McMahon noted that in five years, Long has done nothing as General Manager and put him on probation. Does that mean Long can visit Brian Lawler?
When WWE was in Memphis most recently, Lawler was at the show looking for work, saying he could be of benefit to the company because, due to his own real world experience, he would be able to see all the signs of wrestlers under the influence. The company didn’t bite on that offer. He had told people that he thought this was his last chance to get back to WWE. When the Jackson Sun reported on the arrest, they noted him largely as the son of Jerry Lawler, and mentioned “he is also a professional wrestler,” in a way of thinking that few would know who is was on his own and his newsworthiness was as Jerry’s son.
----I recently was told that Brian showed up at the WWE show in his gimmick pants. Someone also noted to me that he is pretty much homeless staying with people until they get tired of him. This is just really sad to me. A guy with all this talent wasting his life.

Coach's Corner "You Say, I Say 2009 Edition" by Brian Tramel
----Let me start this edition of Coach’s Corner by saying first and foremost I am huge mark for Jim Cornette. He always been one of those guys that I looked up to and listened to a few times when I didn’t want to hear what he had to say. LOL Cornette booked a card in Philly, PA in 1990 that I worked on. He was nice enough to tell me, “As a wrestler, you are a good writer.” And believe me – he could have been a lot more critical of my match than that. Cornette recently got his own web site and started posting commentary about wrestling on there. And being the “student of the game” that I pride myself on – I make sure to read everything he posts on there. His current commentary got me to thinking about a lot of the old school guys – and how they don’t really accept wrestling as it is now. I do consider myself old school in many facets, but I have accepted the evolution of the business. So, that brings us to the 2009 version – “You say, I say”, but this time it is only from Corny’s last commentary.
Nothing gives me the sour belches any quicker than when a performer in the wrestling business, whether a wrestler, manager, referee, or anyone else asks any variation on the question, "What would my character say/do?"
First and foremost is the word "character". It's used constantly today, even by veterans, so much so that many who were around back in the day have to think hard to realize it's a recent term that was NEVER heard in wrestling until the late 80's/early 90's. I worked with and for some pretty major stars, and I NEVER heard "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch, Jerry "The King" Lawler, "Handsome" Jimmy Valiant, "Cowboy" Bill Watts, or anyone else ask what their "character" would do. Clearly, by today's definition, they all had one, but back then it was called a "gimmick". If you were from Texas, you wore a Cowboy hat, boots, and used the Bulldog headlock, your "gimmick" was you were a Cowboy. Most wrestlers had a gimmick because it made them different, made them stand out from the pack. Some wrestlers' gimmick was they had no gimmick, they just wrestled. Some were more outlandish than others, and some were downright goofy. Those usually didn't get over or last long. But ALL of them that got over and drew money had one thing in common--legitimacy--that prevented them from being simply a "character".
----This has changed. I started taking photos and going into the dressing rooms in 1986. I consider that my “origin” of my life around the wrestling business. There was no kayfabe when I stepped thru the doors even though I was just a photographer. They knew I knew SOME about the working of the business and let me take photos and such. As a wrestler, BT Express, I did really think about the character – as it was just really a stab at Billy Travis and later became the “Bad Times” Express. For 18 months I stunk up shows all around this area wrestling guys like JD McKay and Jack Diamond. I was able to take a look at my work and agree with Cornette’s advice.
----When I debuted as a manager as Coach BT, I did think more and more of what my character was and what he would do. I remember Christian Jacobs saying that the actual “Coach” of my character never made sense, because of the way I dressed. But, as I explained to him and later to others – Coach BT was a combination of a lot of things. I loved the John Tolos character with Curt Hennig. “South Park” was a huge success during that time and I wanted to create a character that was larger than life. I told people that Coach BT was what a Cartman’s “Coach-gym teacher” would act like. So, even though this might not be the way they use to do it, I think a lot of the guys – even big time workers – take the time to the think out their character. I do agree with Corny, I think maybe the best at playing their characters are guys that just take their own personality and blow it up – Dustin Starr is the perfect example of a guy in this area. Does he really have to think much about his character?? Nah, but laymen like and many others would benefit from sitting down and deciding who they are before they go thru that curtain – I know it would make some of that bad stuff much better if they could explain it.
A related change the outsiders brought into our wrestling world is the use of the word "storyline". Not only was this word never used in wrestling, it would have been offensive, because it obviously implies wrestling is fake, phony, predetermined, or choreographed. Old-timers in wrestling had the good sense not to get in the habit of using words like that, and called these things "angles" or "programs", as in "We did an angle with Dusty in Florida", or "We ran a program with Stevens in California". A "storyline" would be something a scripted TV show or movie would have. By using other terms, it very subconsciously kept everyone thinking more in terms of legitimate shoot than preplanned work.
----I must have picked that up from Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, but storyline has always been in my “inside” vocabulary. The words angles and programs – well I used them also. But, when I was booking or when I refer to booking on this site – I talk about the storyline and where it is going. The wrestling world changed – it evolved. We can sit back and bitch and moan about how in the old days stuff would be offensive, but in reality it is just change – it is hard to take for some people. I remember when Saturday Night Fever came out and everyone was talking about how many times the wold “fuck” was said in the movie – now it seems to just be a word in an R-rated movie. It is not offensive to anyone now, because everyone knows that the matches are predetermined and such.

For decades, anyone who wanted to knock wrestling in a newspaper article, magazine story, TV report or whatever would use the word "script" in a snide, derogatory way, as in "the match went exactly according to the script." In actual fact, there really never WAS a script in pro wrestling. Interviews were never written out and studied, they were done off the cuff. Matches were never written out, they were called in the ring with a finishing sequence agreed to beforehand. TV shows were shot off a one or two page format with the list of matches, interviews, and times of segments. Now, obviously, that has changed as well, but it still makes me want to vomit when some crew member asks to see my "script", as anyone with a long background in wrestling will say "format" or "runsheet".
----This is another term that has become accepted by most. I really never used this word until I started booking shows. My first few shows were really scripted to the point of who vs who and why. Mainly to try to get over to the workers what I was doing. I remember my first CCW show and Derrick King was handed a script. He was shocked that I was that organized and shocked that everyone on the show was there. I understand there was never a script for interviews and such. Much like today, not everyone was good on interviews. Guys like Lance Russell and Gordon Solie would actually be the one doing the interview with just the boys following along. Ric Flair, Jim Cornette, Jerry Lawler, Dusty Rhodes and many more – they never needed to be told anything. And good workers in this area – that are good on the mic – all you have to do is say what point you want to get across as the booker and they go with it. I don’t think I ever scripted whole matches either, but would script a finish or start.
Here's another one--"Resthold". This one has gotten so prevalent even veterans use it now, but I guarantee you that if you had told Dick Murdoch you didn't like the "resthold" he grabbed, he would have put one on you that wouldn't have been very restful. Obviously, after a fast-paced high spot or series of moves, you DO grab a hold to catch your breath or regroup, but to call a hold in a wrestling match a "resthold" is to undermine the basic logic behind wrestling. A wrestling match is supposed to consist of two people applying holds to each other until one man triumphs. The holds are supposed to be dangerous, painful and punishing. The term "resthold" sounds like a treatment you'd be given at a day spa, so every time it is used, it diminishes the importance of the holds in a match, and puts more pressure on guys to do more high-impact, higher-injury-risk things to please the crowd. Another change by the outsiders that ends up punishing the wrestlers in the end.
----I have to agree here on what Corny says in that saying “resthold” applies that the holds are not dangerous. But, it is also a term that has been part of my vocabulary since I been around the business. And many of the boys use it. And I can hear Ken Wayne saying right now, “Well..it still doesn’t make it right!” In a way maybe not, but if I am a worker in a match and our communication is well enough to knowing what we are doing, then I think it is fine. I had a long time argument with Wayne about “double down” with him saying it is “double knockout”. I polled a few of the old school guys and two of the guys that came back with “double knockout” were Randy Hales and Beau James. Just out of the respect of these guys and the business, I started calling it DKO, instead of “double down”. Does it really matter? If I am working a guy is he going to know what I am talking about if I say “double down”?? I think he will and I even ask Nick Dinsmore about this one time – he pretty much said both are used and he had no problem with it. Beau James said that when he hears terms like this he thinks the worker is a backyarder, which is not always true. Does this go for that stupid 2-finger handshake also?? LOL
The worst part of this is that seeing the rivals together in public validates the old, tired comment, "They fight in the ring, then go out and have a drink with each other after the show." This would be said by any obnoxious, wise-ass know-it-all who wanted to knock wrestling or act like he was smarter than everyone else, going back to when I was a kid. Of course, it never actually HAPPENED, at least in any territory worth a shit or involving any recognizable talent. I remember many Saturdays sitting in the parking lot of the New Orleans Famous Fried chicken in Memphis, unable to go in because the babyfaces had gotten there first. There were heel and babyface hotels, you couldn't stay in the same one because fans and rats would see you together. There were heel and babyface bars for the same reason. Now, all the work we of the previous eras did is negated by a bunch of immature jackoffs who can't prevent themselves from going out in public together. Even if the promotions don't insist on kayfabing anymore, the boys could do it themselves, as they should realize this affects THEIR money more than a multi-millionaire promoter's, but they don't.
----They had babyface and heel motels, bars and restaurants. I even remember switching cars when we worked at MSWA in Gibson, TN before going to the show. I wrote my friend Tom Robinson that was a mainstay with guys in Philly and he wrote this in response.
You know years are my weakness. My memory is the shits...I could only say late 80's, when Crockett started hitting Philly.
Kayfabe was nowhere near what it was when guys worked territories (even in the same time frame as national as some regional promotions were still around), as whe New York guys would stay ay The old Best Western in Philly, then switched to The Marriott. The Crockett crew was always Marriott. They should have changed the term to Cokefabe or Ratfabe! That was the main concern of a good portion of the boys.
Don't get me wrong, Tully didn't openly do a shot of Jack with Magnum in front of fans, but were clearly in the same bar and could care less.
From the best of my recollection, Curt Hennig always tried to protect the business, but otherwise nobody comes to mind?

All I know is this--when wrestling was a closed society, no one publicly admitted it was a work, and the way those inside the sport talked about it reflected that, the country was made up of three groups: people who knew wrestling was a work and didn't like it--people who knew wrestling was a work but still liked it because they didn't know how it was worked, why it was worked or to what extent--and people who believed wrestling was real and would never miss a match. The last group was larger than most people ever knew. Now, we've completely eliminated the last group, and significantly reduced the middle one. When someone gets in the sport today, whether as a wrestler, promoter, "writer" or whatever, they think they already know everything about it because they've studied up on the internet, and approach it like show biz instead of sport. That is what has drained the passion, emotion, and believability out of the performances, and that, in turn, is what keeps the UFC on top of the combat sports world today. It doesn't matter that UFC is real and pro wrestling isn't--it matters that the ticket-purchasing public can tell that the UFC folks are TREATING IT like its real, and the wrestling folks are not. That difference is the difference between paying to see a sporting event, and watching a comedy or variety show for free.

I am not saying as in exposing the business, but as a whole. I have 2000 people come to my site every day – reading about results and stories. A local show draws 150 and we consider that good. A person can sit at home and watch all the wrestling they want to watch on youtube.com and they can also come to this site, WNC, WON and so on to get the news.

If anyone studied the way the Japanese business evolved, then we are following the same path. There are still tons of people watching WWE every week, going to the arenas and buying PPVs. Not nearly the total it was in people 20 years ago, but it is just what the business is today. When Star Wars debuted [lower ticket prices, but same can be said about wrestling shows today] in 1977, it grossed 322 million. I remember waiting in a huge line to see the show. Would you accept that movie today with the same special effects?? Nah – we want things like Transformers – Rise of the Fallen, which has already grossed close to 364 million.

Nothing gives me the sour belches any quicker than when a performer in the wrestling business, whether a wrestler, manager, referee, or anyone else asks any variation on the question, "What would my character say/do?"
First and foremost is the word "character". It's used constantly today, even by veterans, so much so that many who were around back in the day have to think hard to realize it's a recent term that was NEVER heard in wrestling until the late 80's/early 90's. I worked with and for some pretty major stars, and I NEVER heard "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch, Jerry "The King" Lawler, "Handsome" Jimmy Valiant, "Cowboy" Bill Watts, or anyone else ask what their "character" would do. Clearly, by today's definition, they all had one, but back then it was called a "gimmick". If you were from Texas, you wore a Cowboy hat, boots, and used the Bulldog headlock, your "gimmick" was you were a Cowboy. Most wrestlers had a gimmick because it made them different, made them stand out from the pack. Some wrestlers' gimmick was they had no gimmick, they just wrestled. Some were more outlandish than others, and some were downright goofy. Those usually didn't get over or last long. But ALL of them that got over and drew money had one thing in common--legitimacy--that prevented them from being simply a "character".
----This has changed. I started taking photos and going into the dressing rooms in 1986. I consider that my “origin” of my life around the wrestling business. There was no kayfabe when I stepped thru the doors even though I was just a photographer. They knew I knew SOME about the working of the business and let me take photos and such. As a wrestler, BT Express, I did really think about the character – as it was just really a stab at Billy Travis and later became the “Bad Times” Express. For 18 months I stunk up shows all around this area wrestling guys like JD McKay and Jack Diamond. I was able to take a look at my work and agree with Cornette’s advice.
----When I debuted as a manager as Coach BT, I did think more and more of what my character was and what he would do. I remember Christian Jacobs saying that the actual “Coach” of my character never made sense, because of the way I dressed. But, as I explained to him and later to others – Coach BT was a combination of a lot of things. I loved the John Tolos character with Curt Hennig. “South Park” was a huge success during that time and I wanted to create a character that was larger than life. I told people that Coach BT was what a Cartman’s “Coach-gym teacher” would act like. So, even though this might not be the way they use to do it, I think a lot of the guys – even big time workers – take the time to the think out their character. I do agree with Corny, I think maybe the best at playing their characters are guys that just take their own personality and blow it up – Dustin Starr is the perfect example of a guy in this area. Does he really have to think much about his character?? Nah, but laymen like and many others would benefit from sitting down and deciding who they are before they go thru that curtain – I know it would make some of that bad stuff much better if they could explain it.
A related change the outsiders brought into our wrestling world is the use of the word "storyline". Not only was this word never used in wrestling, it would have been offensive, because it obviously implies wrestling is fake, phony, predetermined, or choreographed. Su Yung New MLW Champion!!
----MLW recently stripped Tasha Simone of the MLW Title. They ran an angle which was based on the results from October 4th, 2008. They took the lady who lost in the championship match - Su Yung - and put her in the ring with the winner of the semi main event match from that night - Brandi Wine. They battled it out for the vacated ladies belt at the MLW tapings on June 27th and 28th. Brandi Wine actually won the belt in the match, BUT after further review, Su's leg was over the bottom rope and the ref, should not have counted the pin fall. Su Yung asked for and was granted a rematch with Brandi Wine with Yung winning the MLW Championship.
----Not sure the exact reason [I just master the web site dammit!!] in stripping Simone of the belt, as it could have been an injury or something else. Simone did not appear on the last set up tapings and is not scheduled for the next tapings.
