Chris Benoit: More News & Links - Last Post for Today

----I took a few hours off from the site to just away from all of this. As I was headed to bed, I grabbed most of this off of http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/. This has been a very sad day and it is hard to continue to write about this tragic situation.

Citing the beginning of a “healing process,” World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon opened tonight’s Extreme Championship Wrestling episode by saying that Chris Benoit’s name would not be mentioned at any other point during the telecast because of the revelations that have surfaced about the murder/suicide since a Benoit ntribute show aired on last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw. The telecast is opening with a bout between John Cena and Johnny Nitro. A complete ECW report will be posted later tonight.

In light of the reports questioning whether Benoit’s actions were related to steroid use, WWE has issued a press release on its web site hoping to debunk the “sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney.” The posting includes a statement that Benoit had passed a WWE drug test administered on April 10, 2007. ESPN.com reported that Fayette County district attorney Scott Ballard indicated that Daniel Benoit had needle marks on his arm. Ballard said he believed David Benoit was being given human growth hormone by his parents because of concerns that the seven-year-old was undersized for his age.ESPN.com also reported that Ballard confirmed one of two text messages Benoit sent claimed that his son and wife were “sick.” Here is a link to the story: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2917133

Benoit press conference briefing with gruesome details

By Alex MarvezEmail: alex@wrestlingobserver.com.

Here are details from a law enforcement news conference held Tuesday afternoon regarding what is now ruled as a double homicide/suicide involving Chris Benoit, wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel in their Atlanta-area home:

Fayette (Ga.) County district attorney Scott Ballard said law enforcement officials believe Benoit killed his wife Nancy on Friday night via affixation, then did the same to Daniel on Saturday morning before hanging himself Saturday night.

Ballard said Nancy Sullivan’s wrists and feet were bound with tape and that there was some blood under her head. Ballard said Sullivan was found in an upstairs living room area. Daniel Benoit was found dead in his own bed in his upstairs bedroom. A bible was placed next to the body of Nancy and Daniel.

Benoit hung himself with a cord in his basement weight room.

Anabolic steroids and what was described by one law-enforcement official as “lots” of what is believed legal prescription medication were found in the house. A complete list of medications may be given to the media at a later date.

A WWE “co-worker” [believed Chavo Guerrero] received a text message on a delayed basis from Benoit. Officials declined to elaborate on what information the messages contained.

Benoit was previously arrested in the Atlanta area on a DUI charge but has no record of a previous arrest for domestic violence.

There was no suicide note left inside the house.

“In a community like this, it’s bizarre to have a murder/suicide, especially involving the death of a seven-year-old child,” Mallard said. “That’s what struck me the most in all this: There’s a seven- year-old little boy who’s dead. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my mind around that completely.”“It struck me as somewhat bizarre that he would even be in the home with their deceased bodies all that time … I’m baffled why anyone would kill a seven year old. I don’t have any idea at all about a motive.”

The AP reported that law enforcement officials close to the investigation have confirmed the current belief that Chris Benoit strangled wife Nancy with an electrical chord on Saturday, smothered his son with a bag on Sunday and then hung himself in his basement/weight room on Monday.

AP: Steroids Found In House

ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, and asphyxiated his son, Daniel, before hanging himself in the weight room of the family's suburban Atlanta home, law enforcement said Tuesday. Authorities also said they found a number of drugs -- all believed to be legal -- including steroids.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."

"We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at," said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said test results may not be back for weeks.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Authorities were investigating the deaths at a secluded Fayette County home as a murder-suicide and were not seeking any suspects. The official who described the manner of death spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information was to be released at a news conference later Tuesday.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Nancy Benoit filed for a divorce in May 2003, saying their three-year union was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment." But she later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.

In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In his response, Benoit sought joint custody.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.
"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said authorities asked that it not release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

AP: Chris Benoit Strangled His Wife

ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press Tuesday.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said test results may not be back for weeks or even months.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in DeKalb County.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.
Authorities also declined to say whether drugs or steroids were found inside the house. "We're not releasing any information as far as what was located inside the house," sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said Tuesday.
Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Whiteside said toxicology tests could take up to a week or longer to complete.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.
"They were nice," said Lorre Jones, who lives across the street. Her daughter Alaina said: "We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm."
Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate Tuesday.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

Benoit became a standout at an early age among wrestling prospects who trained in the dungeon basement of the house where fellow Canadians and professional wrestlers Owen and Bret Hart trained. Owen Hart was killed during a wrestling event in 1999.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Notes on tonight's WWE TV shows in San Antonio

by Dave Meltzer

Dave@wrestlingobserver.com

The lack of an understandable explanation to the circumstances of the death of Chris, Nancy and Daniel Benoit has left virtually the entire wrestling community reeling.

Within WWE, the obvious questions and lack of answers are no different from fans and most of his long-time friends.

Vince McMahon was the inspiring general both to the wrestlers as well as the office staff all day yesterday. He held it together and was a rock of strength for much of the talent, which because of their admiration and in many cases love for Benoit, were saddened, perplexed and having an incredibly difficult time dealing with it.

Vince made the decision to run Smackdown and ECW tapings tonight without any angles or backstage storylines. The show will consist of straight wrestling matches and like last night, the original shows were scrapped. The attempt to put together a show was difficult because the crew and creative staff were said to be both emotionally and physically wrecked after yesterday.

The belief is they will brief viewers on what happened early in the show, and then product two low key shows of nothing but matches.

Raw Opening From Last Night

----This includes the opening with Vince McMahon and a Benoit video. The end shows him kissing and hugging Daniel and his wife Nancy. I really hope we find out something else happened to this family today rather them saying Benoit did it.

TV Report from Atlanta

Fans Call About Benoit's Death Two Weeks Ago??

- CNN is reporting that two weeks prior to the tragic events of thisweekend, concerned WWE fans and fans of Chris Benoit called a localAtlanta news channel inquiring about the death of Benoit. CNN is unable to say where the rumor started but say it is an eerie coincidence to say theleast. (I had not heard any such rumor and am quite surprised that CNNwould mention it.)

Toxicology results will be in by 1:00PM EST and while police are almost positive it was a double murder-suicide, they are not ruling out any othercause of death in the case.

For those interested, CNN will be covering the toxicology results as soon as they become public.

Again, to refresh, two weeks PRIOR to this weekend, fans called a local Atlanta news channel asking if they knew any information on the death of Benoit.

More on Benoit family death by Dave Meltzer

The WWE web site reported that Chris Benoit sent some curious text messages early Sunday morning, which concerned friends to alert Richard Hering, WWE's VP of Government Relations to call Fayette County sheriffs on Monday to check the residence.Benoit sent the text messages to Chavo Guerrero, one of his close friends. The story said WWE officials learned of Benoit's death at 4 p.m. from the local authorities. They gathered the wrestlers to the ring area where they were told only of the deaths of Benoit, wife Nancy and son Daniel. They were told the live show was being canceled.Nothing has been stated regarding what will happen tomorrow night when Smackdown and ECW are taped in San Antonio.
