Arena Report: NEW West Memphis, AR 7.23.10

----The matches were taped for TV, so don’t expect tons of stars for these bouts.  All matches were really good and the guys worked hard.  I was told when Jerry Lawler’s Memphis Wrestling started to air that it would be all about the “young talent,” but let me tell you – NEW IS about the young guys.  As you will see from the results, the whole roster is young guys pushed on TV.

----Dan Matthews beat Jon Allen.  Good opener.  Allen has improved since I last watched him.  Matthews is still my pick for RRO Rookie of the Year 2010.  Everything was back & forth.  Allen with nice dropkick.  Allen misses a moonsault with Matthews pinning him for the win. [**1/2]

----Justin Smart beat Kevin Charles.  Smart looked good here.  Charles was ok, but real sloppy in spots.  Pretty dropkick from Smart.  Smart did a neckbreaker into a submission that looked real good.  Charles missed a dropkick and Smart pinned him.  Charles’ missed dropkick looked bad and then Charles put his legs up ready for the pin before Smart attempted it. ----Eric Wayne beat Moe Stegall by KO.  Nothing big in this bout, it was just building with Wayne beating the crap out of Stegall because Moe beat him last week.  Real stiff stuff with Moe going down from a kick and not getting up. [**]

----Austin Lane/Kid Nikels beat Chris Stryker/Shawn Reed.  A real good TV bout and the best match on the show.  Reed is just flawless along with Lane.  Great spot with Reed doing a leapfrog spot, but Kid caught him mid-air with a shoulder block.  Big markout moment!! Nikels is “the” man here at NEW.  His interviews and ring presence is so fun. Hot tag was a little flat, but overall a good match.  Lane made Stryker submit for the win. [**3/4]

NOTES

----Interviews aired before each match.  Matthews is getting better on his mic work.  Justin Smart has improved tons on interviews along with this ring work.  Easily the Most Improved 2010…I really like the Moe character and the kid has good charisma & mic skills.  He does need a lot of work, but this is a guy you can build some fun storylines around…This was my first time to see Stryker.  He did real well on the pre-match interview.  Work in the ring was much better than I had been told.  Solid with moves and works good for a big guy.  He reminds me of Rhino in size and such, but needs to drop a few pounds and work on the cardio, but nothing that I am saying here he does not know.  That is a compliment to him as a lot of guys you tell that to in this area would consider it an insult, but he understands what he has to do to improve.  He is one of those guys that you can see improving from his stay at NEW…Nikels finished the TV show out with announcers John Steele and Terrance Ward…Chuck Poe and Downtown Bruno were the refs and as usual, they did a great job.  It is funny how they ref a total different style with Bruno interacting with the fans and Poe being “Mr. Professional,” but both of them have that “in charge” type attitude…This promotion gets a lot of criticism and such for not drawing a lot of fans and just doing a one hour TV taping, but it is the most professional operation in the area.  Bruno did a pre-taping pep talk to the boys.  The TV is all formatted out and booked.  The camera people are given instructions.  They have a meeting after the show about production and what they thought was wrong.  For a young wanting to learn all about the wrestling business, this is the place to be…They have a big show coming up on August 6, 2010 called “Tap Outs and Knockouts” with Eric Wayne vs Austin Lane rematch for US Jr Title and Kid Nikels vs Byron Willcott in Byron’s return to the area…A fun time was had by all.  Thanks to NEW cast and crew.
