Leonard Comments on Mo

----This letter came from Leonard Doan, who some of you are probably familiar with and some may not be. Doan has worked since 1980 in this area [as “Luscious” Leonard and The Night Hunter] doing indys for guys like Ron Spence and I seen him work for Reggie Montgomery and others. Here is what he had to say.

I just wanted to commend Mo on his observations. Certainly anyone who works at any level of pro wrestling wants to prosper financially. Unfortunately the reality is that most of the time that is not the case. The reality is that if a promoter is not able to show a minimal profit, or at the bare minimum to break even (hence not loosing with any regularity), they are forced to inevitably discontinue their promotion. Make no mistake, there are some excellent athletes/entertainers, even wrestlers in the Arkansas/Tennessee/ Mississippi area, but it is safe to say that less than 1% of them will ever make a living at it.

Now, it is time for my pet peeve. Wrestlers work the crowd, not the other wrestlers and promoters. Promoters look at your town or towns and realize that a loyal crew that loves the business will keep you in business for far longer than wrestlers that realize that you can be manipulated. There is no doubt hat some wrestlers are more talented than others, but with the exception of wrestling abroad, the WWE and perhaps TNA, wrestling is a slightly profitable hobby at best.

I have probably made nearly every mistake to be made as a promoter and a wrestler, but through the years I have seen them made by all others in this business. This is a continual learning experience, and I suggest that others in this business take this as a learning experience as well. In closing, whether or not you are making $1 or $1000, you should respect and love the business, but realize it is an opportunity to pursue your passion not an occupation.
